Hello everyone,

I just recently purchased my first AR-15, an Olympic arms MFR, flat top.

I figured out how to field-strip it, but I can't figure out how to get the free float handguard off.

Is there a trick to it, or am I just blind?

Thanks,
Tim

Well, succinctly put, you can't.  At least not without special tools (vise blocks, vise, barrel wrench).  The one piece handguard tube is actually a big barrel nut (it holds on the barrel to the upper), the two piece tubes are similar, only that the barrel nut is separate from the tube (but the same principle applies), so it can't be removed without taking off the front sight base and gas tube.  On the bright side, FF tubes rarely need to be stripped for cleaning, since there is nothing under there to clean except for the barrel.  If you are really concerned, you can spray some gun oil down there, and let the excess run out.

Good luck, and welcome to the forums

Alright, thanks.

It wasn't that I thought I'd ever need to take it off, it was just bugging me that I couldn't figure out how.
