I am obviously new to the site, but have a question.  Seems like their's a lot of effort around customizing M4s and other shorties.  I understand that the shorter, close-quarters capable weapons would be more prone to use of lights and such, but I have not seen a lot of discussion regarding customizing longer barrel ARs.  What are the popular tweaks?

The most popular tweaks for a long barrel AR, atleast for me, are free floating the barrel, mounts and quality optics... and ofcourse, load development, the ultimate tweak... [;)]

I would assume little emphasis on rail systems?.  I just got a Colt Match Target Competition model and cannot imagine the weight of the thing with a large SIRS on it.

Right now, I'd rather put my money into some good glass and Black Hills match ammo right now.  Figure for versatility, get an M4 upper to go with it.  I have enough short range guns anyhow...

Don't forget the trigger upgrade and a bipod.

If you want a rail system but want to keep weight to a minimum you might try the Daniel Defense or the PRI Carbon fiber.  Also, Briley and ...someone else..lol make CF tubes without the big steel barrel nut of the PRI, these would probably be the lightest if you don't need the rails.  Of course you could always put the rails where you wanted them, just drill and tap.
