How many AR-15 mags are enough? Like  to poll this just to see various opinions.

I've got over 100 mags and 6 ARs and still don't feel like that is enough [;)]

Damn.

i have about 30 mags, and still are looking for more when ever possible.  i have becoming a mag whore since the 94 ban.

I have 13 - 30 rounders and 3 - 10 rounders for my 3 AR15s (no 20's).  I also have 2 - 20's, 2 - 10's, and 2 - 5's for my AR10T.  Personally, I think I have enough, but I seem to keep buying them when I come across deals I can't pass up.  I guess it never hurts to have too many.  Of course I do plan to buy more ARs in the near future too.  [:D]

Some say ten per rifle is a good number.  To me though, it's like ammo:  if you can count them, you don't have enough [;)].

i've got 5 30's, 3 20's, and 1 10 rounder for 1 AR

I think I have about 15 20's , 15 30s and a ten. I think 10 of each would be more than enough. I think we only hoard so many because of the ban.

One of my primary carry pistols has a 6 round magazine. I went for two years with just the two magazines it came with before I finally broke down and bought a third.

I believe ten per rifle is enough also. I have 20 30's and 5 20's for two ARs. But I do have several bandoleers and countless stripper clips fully loaded.

Wow... some of you guys are hard core.  I've got three 30 rounder's per rifle (2) for a total of six and a ten rounder for each.  I use the 10 round mags for varmint hunting, which is the primary use for my M4 AR.  If I miss on the first shot I don't usually get a second anyway.

With the 30 round mags I can envision some scenarios where I might need them for home defense, but I'm thinking I must have seriously eff'ed up in my planning if I need more than 30 shots to defend myself.  I can't think of a real self defense scenario where I would need more than that.  Fact is, I keep a Winchester Model 1300 Defender handy for home defense.  The only reason I have more is for convenience when I'm shooting.  I can load up several mags at once.

Question for you folks who keep lots'a mags around.  What scenarios do you envision where you might need that many?

Just curious.  If it's a good answer maybe I'll buy some more mags.

2 AR's, 1 M16(on the way) and about 120 30 rounders.  Not enough of any of them.

I don't really have a plan to use all those mags, I just like having them.  If the SHTF, I could probably have all available ammo loaded in mags instead of on clips, and I would easily be able to supply a lot of guys with magazines.

Never can have enough ammo or magazines. I think that I am not the only one who feels that way.
1/27/2004 3:18:05 PM EDT
[#12]
I have 4 ARs and go by 15 mags per rifle as I use saw pouches to hold mags so basic loads are 14 in 2 pouches and 1 in the rifle. The 3 ARs are hand outs for family and for me I have 23 2 saw pouches and an 8 mag chest pouch and 1 in the rifle so my basic load is 23 mags.So I have 75 on hand 25 brit steel and 50 US GI.

That's cool, a warm and fuzzy feeling from having a bunch of ammo and mags counts as a good reason I guess.

Nobody who has posted yet has what I would consider "a lot" of mags by what I have seen at some people's [s]fortresses[/s] homes. A hundred mags is not "a lot" to many people here...

5 USGI 20s, 1 10, and one Colt 20 blocked to 5.  Not much since I only shoot a RRA varminter.

I've got about 30 mags for my SAR-1 though.  I got a thing for AK mags.  There are just so many different kinds!

Well, I started this post and it has been interesting. BTW,  I have 6 20's 4 30's and 2 10's. I think I will top out with 4 more 20 rounders.Easier when going to the range.

talk about unintended consequenses, before the ban I had 3, right before the ban went into effect folks would buy magazines for which they didn't have the weapons.

I have 5 mags- 4 USGI and 1 Thermold.

I might get one more 30 rounder so I can have 6 mags and maybe clip them together with a mag coupler- 3 couplers.

But really I am waiting to see if the mag ban sunsets. Then I might buy a couple of new 20 rounders.

I am not a mag whore. YMMV.

Well, whats the point of having a few thousand dollor rifle if you dont have enough magazines for it. If you run out of magazines all you have is a over priced paperweight.

Spend at least as much on magazines as you did on each of your rifles.

Get at least 7 per your AR.

However, 10 per your AR is recommended. (considering how liberals will try to ban it again after 9/14/04)

If your stocking for SHTF you have to remember you will not be getting re-supplied so you have what you have and thats it.

I plan on living longer than 7-10 mags and I dont want to run out of ammo or have to stop in them middle of a fight to reload magazines.

I plan on poping and droping at least 100 mags before I go down because im rambo LOL.

Got only one mag thats not USGI, a 10rd bushy for hunting.  How many can you fit in two footlockers?

how many mags do our service men carry in battle and do you think its enough ?

The average solder carrys 7 mags and four m67 frag grenades.

Thats enough when you have extra ammo in your hummer, apc, tank, whatever and are constantly re-supplied. I would still want more and if they dident give um to me I would bring my own.

and ive got 30 of them sittin on one of my gear shelves with my lbv and molle crap (those are army)

And do the same with the ammo... Way way too much is still not enough when it comes to mags and ammo...

There must be a semi-scientific way of determining what a reasonable amount of mags per rifle is.These numbers are pure speculation but ,if a 30 rd GI mag is good for 60 load-unload cycles that would be 1800 rds.Now if a AR-15 is good for 50,000 rds. That would be 50,000 divided by 1800 for a mag count of about 18 30rd. mags per rifle.

I have about 25 mags all together. What really counts is how many filled stripper clips do you have, and I have a lot. You can actually carry more filled stripper clips much easier than you can a lot of mags.

I'm going to wait until mags come down to $9.00 after the ban to buy a lot more mags.
