Anyone know what the current upgrade is? I need to order some parts and I'm not sure what to order. Is it the black insert or the blue insert? I've also heard that they went from a 4 coil spring to a 5 coil. Anyone also know of a good place to order these as sawsales, I believe, has a $70. minimum. Thanks for the help. |

Just use a Wolff Xtra Power Extractor spring and whatever rubber insert you have on hand. I use them in all my AR bolts and have no extraction problems. You can order them from Brownells in a three pack. www.brownells.com/aspx/NS/store/ProductDetail.aspx?p=16488&title=AR-15%2fM16+EXTRA+POWER+EXTRACTOR+SPRING |

I haven't used the Wolff spring but,had success using Olympic's X-rings on my bushy shorty. No failures since installation. A friend has had a similar experience with the D-fender available from Brownell's. the X-rings are $3 for a pack of 5 and I believe the D-fenders are $12 a pop. good luck |

If any of you guys just need a couple of Colt springs and don't want to spring for the minimum order at SAW I can help. In November a few of my shooting buddies and I bought a Shiteload of HD Colt springs and inserts from SAW. I fronted the cash and once they came in a few of my "buddies" never paid up-so I got stuck with a small pile of them. I've been selling them for profit on eBay, but if any of you guys need a few I'll sell them to you for what I paid for them. The only downside is that genuine Colt parts are expensive-and we didn't get any kind of volume discount. A single HD Colt spring and black insert is $4.00, and the inserts by themselves are $1.00 each. I have about 20 springs with inserts left and probably 10 loose inserts. Call it 75 cents for shipping. If interested IM me [:)] |

Wow, you guys went through those springs and inserts quick. Thank you!! [:D] I only have two springs and a few inserts left. Everyone who paid via PayPal has had their packages mailed except for M4bangr-yours will be mailed first thing tomorrow morning on the way to the office. Thanks again guys! I just bought a couple of Giles tac slings with the proceeds. Edited to add: The springs are now gone. I also forgot to mention that I'm saving two for Commando_Guy. |

Georgia Precision has the Wolff extra power springs in single packs for $1.50 each. That's a lot better than Brownell's price. They have a light shipping option that is very reasonable also. I could not find them listed on their web site, so call them. They also have RRA black inserts cheap. ( any color insert works ok BTW ) http://www.georgiaprecision.com/ |

Quoted: I didn't think you needed the insert with the Xtra power Wolff springs. Am I off base here? Way off base[:D] You DO need the insert with Wolff, or any other, springs. Now there are those who maintain that the current black onbes are stiffer than the blue ones, and others (like the parts person at Colt with whom I spoke) who maintain that black and blue are the same stiffness, and black was incepted purely to ID the heavier springs, because GI issue replacements are packaged w/spring and insert together. Whatever the truth of the matter, all 5 of my bolts have Wolff springs, and blue inserts, and work just fine[:D] |

This is a quote from the Wolff site: "EXTRACTOR SPRINGS - Extra Power These very strong extractor springs eliminate the extraction problems which are very common in M4 models used extensively in law enforcement. Springs should be used in combination with the new BLACK extractor spring insert available from Colt. Springs also recommended for the M-16, AR-15 & Sporters. Springs are unground and we do not recommend grinding them." http://www.gunsprings.com/1ndex.html I have had personal experience with extraction problems with semi auto 16" carbines of various mfg. and have read of many others on this forum. All mine were solved by the installation of extra power extraction springs. I am of the opinion that the color of the insert is not a factor although RRA, Model 1 and others are now using black inserts. Just good marketing I assume. I am sure some "experts" here will argue that the use of an extra power springs do not fix the root cause of the problem. You can either listen to them or install a $1.50 part to head off this potential problem. Your choice. I have already made mine. |
