If it is a Colt, and made in the 70s, it is a quality AR15 preban.  Post the information on the lower reciever such as Sporter, or SP1 or any other model information.  People can give you an idea if what it is and its value.

It has a 20in. barrel with the m-16 type front grip, it reads Colt on the lower recieve
with the bird cage suppressor in a plastic cover
and never has been fired. It just looked cheap compared to my newer pre-ban Colt, thinner barrel and no foreward assist, I'll get the #'s off the Colt, and post them tomorrow, sorry no pictures from my work.

Sounds like an original SP1...very nice rifle...worth MUCH more than he paid for it, and the quality should be every bit as good as, or better than, your Bushy...but it does look a little different with the triangle fore end and slab side lower.

"Cheap"? Well, if bulk and weight are your standards for not cheap, then I guess your label is correct.

The SP1 is the civilian version of the AR15 as it was SUPPOSED to be; light, handy, and accessible. My own SP1 (carbine cut to an XM177E2 clone) has fired thousands of rounds, been carried on ranges, in the field and in vehicles, and in the 25+ years I've owned it, exactly ONE PART has failed. I had to replace the extractor spring a few years back. The original finally wore out.

What your brother has is essentially the civilian version of the M16 used in Viet Nam. It doesn't have the forward assist or the push pin type front hinge, but beyond that it's pretty much the same. I promise you, it'll put your "cheap" Bushmaster to shame[:D]

It does have the triangle front grip and the flatside lower and bannet lug - Thanks everyone - Didn't want to rough any feathers with you (Diehard) AR peaple- Don't shoot the measenger- I was more upset at the condition of the rifle than enything - this is my older brother , not younger!

Thanks to all, it is an sp1 Colt.
I only got a quick look at the rifle the other day and it was in pretty tough looking shape.
I broke it down and oiled it and cleaned it up and the rifle came back good.
The gun is unfired and still has the plastic end cap on the flash serpressor and an oil wick inside the barrel. The model # sp1 and the serial #s start sp1 58+++, and on the bore reads
cmp chrome bore.

Ahh.  SP1.  IMO this is a collectable model.  In fact, when the AWB dies in September, I expect many older ARs to fall in value, but not the SP1.

Since yours is NIB (I assume you still have the box and all the stuff it came with) I would recommend leaving it that way or selling it now for the value and buying other ARs to shoot.

While I never buy a rifle for collecting (I shoot all mine) there are a lot of follks who do.

I would hang on to it (unfired) as long as possible, value is only going to go up. As far as people's opinons on preban prices coming down don't believe everything you hear. Colt already said they will not make civi. AR's like the use to. Prices may drop $100 to $200 a rifle but them will go back up to supply and demand. And that's if a new ban is not written into law. You have a great rifle their if you shoot it or not. Enjoy

I agree.  Hold onto it and I'd go so far as to say don't fire it.  Ban or no ban, 20 years from NOW it'll really be worth something :) in that condition.
