What do you prefer? ARs with or without comp's
My vote is without! Don't need all that blast/dbs in my face or those around me.

They do look cool, however so would a fake/brake??
Your thoughts guys?

If you are getting one of the KKF MBs, I'd say go for it. I hate the bare muzzle look. However, don't put anything like mini-Y comp on it. Also, in less than a year, you might be able to put a functioning FS instead.

I've got a naked Colt 20", and would like to protect the crown. My son has a 16" and would like to protect our EARS! BTW his 16" has a 10 hole comp thats even louder than those mini ys!!

I just got back my 16" barrel from Kurt with his tac brake installed. Took it to the range to zero and I was impressed. Almost no muzzle flip at all and I didnt' find the noise a problem. Guy next to me was firing a 7mm and it was way louder.

IMHO AR-15`s need something at the end of their barrels. A Flash Hider for Prebans, or a FakeFlash Hider for Postbans. But thats just me.

Agree. (I'm betting that the vast majority of us want a flash suppressor and not a flash hider. Not many flash hider's been used since WWII. Sort like clip and mag - there is a difference.)

I've been wondering something for a while now, might aswell ask here. Why does Bushmaster put Mini-Y's on their rifles if they are so widely recognized as too loud/unnecessary/bad, as opposed to a fake flash hider or another type of brake? I have a Bushy M4 and don't particularly mind the brake, but it seems like I'm in the minority. It is a bit loud though :)

Want something to protect the crown and look cool, however I want the blast/DBLs down range. Got to be a fake or none. I'm a guitar player and need my ears.

I have a mini-y on my Bushy M4 type. I think it looks pretty cool. I also notice to muzzle rise and seems very controllable. With respect to muzzle control, I feel very little difference when I fire XM183 versus 22LR (using the the ciener bolt convesion kit). I guess I am not clear why the mini-y is unpopular. Loudness? How much louder is it, 50%, 75%, 100% louder? At the range, my AR does seem like the loudest rifle there...at par with the shot guns. But I thought that was due to the LC XM183 ammo.

I would go with the Rock River Arms mock comp barrel. Gives you the look of a 14.5"+ flash hider, while still being a 16" and protects the muzzle too. Here in Austria flash hiders are a no-no too, so that is the logical choice. Ever shot a muzzle brake indoors? For a defense rifle- forget it! Regards Cato

Try the same AR bbl style with and without a comp. Its a lot louder as well as putting some (for me anyway) unwanted shock waves your & (those around you) way.

mini-Y comp SEEMS to be doing its job, mainly blowing stuff to me and making crazy noise. With bare / FS muzzle, it sounds like a pop. With mini-Y comp, it sounds like a lightning crack. [whacko] I have a 20" rifle with bare muzzle, and I really can't notice any difference in recoil unless I start shooting more than 1 round per sec. I would really like to suppress this mini-Y comp until the AWB goes out of window. I thought putting crap around it, but I'm afraid that it would blow that stuff away too.

If I had to do it again, I would not put a comp/brake on. Too loud, affects accuracy adversely and the AR15 does not kick enough to warrant it. A fake flash hider would be my choice for a post ban, in hindsight. My Cav comp is loud and obnoxious, I can't wait for the AWB to sunset (knock on wood) so I can get rid of it and put a proper FH on it.

For my post-ban BM 16" carbine, I have a Smith Enterprises comp. It works extremely well and redirects flash in a positive manner too. As for fake flash suppressors, I still can't figure out why you would want anything that's "fake" on a rifle??!! It just doesn't make sense to me.

Think of it as a muzzle protector, and a thread protector as well.

For some the fake/comp would protect the bbl crown as well as looking good. Muzzle rise is not a problem for me.
Link Posted: 11/15/2003 8:55:09 PM EDT
If you don't need the recoil or barrel rise reduction of the comp, using a fake flash hider looks good but your better off with the full 16" barrel. According to the Ammo Oracle a 16" barrel gets good terminal performance out to 140-150 yards and a 14 1/2" 90-100 yards. Thats 33% better which is allot considering the range. The fake flash hiders do look cool though.

Ive got a KKF A2 tac brake on my 20" BM.. Much better look than a bare bbl. I figured if I am going to spend $ on a muzzle device it should do something, instead of just be there. The brake he put on for me is a bit louder and the recoil is less, even though there wasnt much to begin with. It is now just about like shooting a 10/22 W/ Stingers. Still much fun and my ammo is going faster now!

So it isn't that much louder than a bare barrel? Also is it possible to have a perminatly installed tac brake removed and an A2 flash supressor installed when the AWB expires?

Took some nonshooters shooting once. They shot my 16 inch with a phantom because the noise of the muzzle broken 20" Armalite was excessive. I think the Armalite is way louder than my 14.5.

I have a device on my Bushmaster that reduces flash, blast, muzzle rise and increases velocity by well over 200 fps. It's also completely legal. It's a very old idea called "24 inch barrel"

[:\] I've got a naked 20" Colt MT, and my son has a 16" with a 10 HOLE COMP(6 point our way)[>Q] I'm looking to first fix his 16" to save our ears! Next the 20" to protect the crown.

In my experience the Cav Comp is a pussy-cat compared to the Y-Comp and a lot of the other comps/brakes on the market....ever shoot with a JP Brake? Those things sound like a cannon. I can see why given the choice some users would want a bare muzzle...the fake flash hider thing doesn't make sense to me though. The pressed on ones are even harder to get off than a permanntly attached comp.

KKF makes a thread-on fake suppressor that uses the 1/2x28 standard threads. It can be pinned also to be legal. He makes an A2 and A3 model. It can be removed (de-pinned, like the Cav comp) and the threads used for a true flash hider if the AWB sunsets. A3 A2 Don't get me wrong, the Cav Comp I had threaded and pinned is a quality product, and for rapid fire it does make a difference in muzzle rise, but I just think I would prefer a quieter rifle, my target crowned DCM AR15 rifle makes a nice when I pull the trigger, with the Cav Comp it's more like a . It's not as bad as the mini-y, you are right, that thing is downright obnoxious. Just my preference, but a thread on Fake flash hider is no more trouble than a thread on comp or brake, they both have to be pinned to be legal, both are de-pinned the same way after AWB sunset.
