Is it firing two round bursts or is it doubling (firing once when you press the trigger and then again when you release the trigger)? In either case, check your fire control group for wear - especially your trigger and hammer.

I also have a bushy (16”, flattop) with their two stage trigger in it.
While I bought the gun used, I got it from a bro so I know the history and have a good idea of how many rounds down range it has seen. I am thinking <3000.
Anyway, I have the same symptoms with this rig as you are experiencing. An occasional double. I have gone through the function check a million times trying to get the hammer to fall while releasing pressure on the trigger but no go.  I pulled the whole lower apart and cleaned it out, proper lube and re-assembly etc. It went away. Till about a week ago. I have no idea at this point.

While I am a fan of Bushmaster (The factory is but a short drive from my house) and I own three of them, their two stage trigger is not the best.

My solution is to tear it out and install a jewel at some point.

Good luck.

I have one and it does not do this.  You could adjust it out so it's simply a single stage.  Move the right adjustment screw out 1/4th turn into the region it will actually fire in.

Turn the inside (near safety lever, spring loaded) screw all the way up (so the pin clears the bottom) and just lock it in the UP position.

Takes about 10 seconds and it'll at least fire this way, and shouldn't double or burst.  It'd be pretty sloppy but it should work OK.

I'm actually enjoying mine.  I've got less than 1000 rounds through it but so far I have a nice smooth first - about 4lbs or so I guess.  I may be totally wrong with this but the way I have it adjusted after the initial pull you get to a 'null' spot where you can just hold the trigger all day.  If you so much as wish the gun to fire at this point it will go off.

make sure the surfaces of the hammer and sear are NOT lubricated.  They are not meant to be lubricated.

Also mind your trigger control.  Don't release the trigger when firing until the rifle has completed it's cycling function.  Then you release until you feel the click of the sear reengaging, and then squeeze the next shot.

I used to double with one of my .380s, because the single action trigger was so light, and my trigger control sucked.
