I want to buy - build an all colt M4 a3 rifle the upper is pretty easy I can get an preban complete 16" m4 a3 upper at my local gunshow for about 800.00 buck's. the problem is the lower which one is as close to an m4 as you can get? I do not want a slab side and dont want to refinish it! I would like an all black not gray ar 15 government carbine but im not positive. slab side? an 14.5" upper?  I need the help of you experts, as I'm very picky thanks  RAY

Ray,

Upper
To get closer to what our military carries you should look for a 14.5" 1/7 twist barrel.  You can find the 16" barrels easily but the 14.5's seem to be a bit harder to find.  You could always purchase a 16" and have someone like Kurt cut it down to 15" then reinstall the A2 birdcage.  That would be as close as you can get and still be legal.

Lower
This is were it will get tricky.  You'll need to find a small hole, raised fence lower.  Sounds easy but it isn't and when you do find one, you'll pay dearly.  It doesn't matter if it has a sear block or not because someone like Kurt can remove it.  You'll also want to make sure it has Colt lower parts and a Colt collapsible buttstock.

Finishing
I know you said you didn't want to refinish it but you may not find an upper and lower that match.  You may want to look into having the SOCOM finish put on it when you find all the pieces.

Good luck!
