Anybody got an opinion on these things?  Use one? know the weight?

How about any of these?

All the ones you chose run a little on the hot side when you are shooting much. Heck, here in the FL sun, the aluminum handguard can get rather hot just sitting in the sun without beng fired. Do a little rapid firing (not even all that much) and the thing can heat up quick. The Houge is probably the heaviest of all of them. If you are looking to spend about that much money, I would probably suggest the Olympic FIRSH handgaurd. Its a nice unit for the money, and you get accessory rails at 12, 3, 6 and 9 o'clock. It has a lot of vents for good air flow and cooling.

If you want about the best free float systems, you should look at the ARMS SIR series, the Knights RAS II or the FF RAS. These will all cost significantly more, but they are more versitile, modular and rugged systems.

Thanks for the reply.
I currently have a setup with the RIS/RAS, and am looking for something different when I get around to finishing out my ultralight AR.
How about the fiberglass looking ones?  The only one I've seen so far is the Armalite, which is too long as they use a longer carbine handguard.  I would think that even if these things are heavy, they couldn't be nearly as heavy as the SIR monster.
Of course, I may just wind up with a set of Cavarms M4 profile handguards after all is said and done, although I like the idea of a free-float.

Hi Norm, the Fiberglass wont be quite as heavy as the Aluminum, and it wont heat up either. But it still has pretty limited Air flow. The SIR is not NEARLY as heavy as it looks, and the new ARMS #50 slim SIR is even lighter. If you are looking for a lightweight free floated handgaurd, the lightest thing out there right now is the carbon fiber tube made by Hyperform. I have one on a special lightweight preban I've built. I do not like it nearly as much as my SIR or RAS II, but I like it more than my aluminum Bushmaster free float tube. Here's a picture.

I have both the metal tube from Bushmaster and the Fiberglass tube from Armalite. The metal heats up in the sun and during fire. It offers a good grip. I like the fiberglass ones better, but it's just a tube (no rail etc.....) It will take a bi-pod though.

this thing will be irons only, and I have no use for lights, lasers, bipods, front grips, seeing eye dogs, and whatever else people are hanging off the ends of their rifles these days.
The point here will be lightweight and simple, but I though if a free-floater was as light as anything else, offered the same heat dissipation, and is just as sturdy, then why not?
Newar, where'd you get that carbon fiber jobber?  I'm not too fond of the ghetto looks, but I bet its light as hell and doesn't heat up.

HI/PERFORM, not Hyperform, I always get that mixed up. Presently, it is the lightest thing on the market.

Again (and again), I am impressed at the experience to be found on AR15.com

I'm afraid that this may be a pollution of you post, norman74, and the only reason I post at all is to move your question to the top of the board, I will say that my only experience has been with the handguards that look, from the exterior, just like the standard AR handguards.  Haven't heard that there is a significant difference between the offerings of the "major" manufacturers.  BTT.

IMHO
