I just called local gun shop to order my RRA Elite Tactical and was told a 4 week wait for the regular barrel and they have no idea how long for stainless because they do not know when they are getting the stainless barrels in...is it worth the wait for the stainless or should i go with the chrome moly. I like the idea of beeing able to shoot heavier rounds with the stainless 1:8 twist but is it really woth it... any comments would help, i am new to all this and want to get the best, and you all seem to know your stuff! Thanks |

Quoted: like i said i am new at this but why go chrome lined over stainless, is it better? And i dont care about looks, i want a good shooting ar. Give me a reason for your argument.... It has to do with "purpose", josepi. How do you intend on using your AR? Target/Long Range shooting - you'll want the stainless steel barrel in either 20 or 24" length. Everthing else, (including plinkin, 3-Gun Matches, hunting and etc... out to about 3-400 yards) - as stated above "Go Chrome or Go Home", as chrome lined barrels last longer and are less suseptible to mistreatment. As your choice was a Tactical RRA to begin with, suspect "chrome-lined" is what ya want, should be plenty accurate for your application. Mike |

You can shoot the crap out of it with little or no cleaning. |

IMHO Stainless for Accuracy Chrome Moly for regular long term shooting Chrome plated for full auto. ( I have heard that there are too many flaws with the plated stuff. such as flaking off, uneven etc.) Chrome is supposed to be a lot harder than the rest. I say prove it. |
| My Purpose for the rifle is plinking, self defense, and whatever reason you can think up! I dont care about the looks i just want the best overall and olyman i heard the same thing from a DPMS Dealer, that Chrome lined has many flaws, and that you either get a Good Lining or a Bad Lining! |

If self-defense is an requirement - then Chrome Lining is mandatory. The chrome lined chamber has less friction than the stainless or bare chrome/moly chambers. That means more reliability in extraction - particulary when dirty. As a bonus all the companies that have chrome lined barrels also use the proper M16 chamber (again for reliable operation). All of the stainless barrels use the tighter SAMMI chamber dimensions, and with chrome/moly barrels it could be SAMMI, Wyled, or M16 chambered (depends on the Mfg). So order your rifle with the RRA Chrome Lined M4 barrel. |

Hey, DamnYank I just bought one of those... 16" extended handguard SS A2. Like yours? I've got mine on a bushy lower with a 2-stage. Hope to get a lotta years out of it. If you want to email me any cleaning suggestions I'd appreciate it. I haven't really shot since my serivce days. |
| Yea javven mine is a 16in midlength stainless A2. As far as cleaning goes I would get a 1pc rod. bore guide and the neccessary patches and jags and a good solvent such as Shooters Choice and have at it. Also don't be afraid of using grease on it,I use a high temp grease thats sold at the local farm store and I use FP10 in place of CLP and lube the thing using Derrick Martins technique which is grease the hell out of it. Zardov, my stainless AR barrels are black oxided, not shiny. And my other rifles with stainless barrels are a nice matte bead-blasted finish. Never had a problem with the "tight match chamber" thing in my stainless barrels. But then, I don't shoot steel cased ammo. Go stainless, it's painless. |
| Let me add just a note of caution here for any newbies, when I say I grease the hell out of it like Mr.Martin it doesn't mean I use a whole 1lb tube of grease when I do it. I grease the recvr extension tube, buffer spring and all but the face of the buffer, also getting grease is the bolt carrier, the inside of upper where the bolt carrier rides and just a good smidge of grease to the bolt lugs as I would not recomend a large amount there. Just use common sense and you should be fine.HTH |
