I'm building a flat-top bull-barrel AR-15 in .223 and I'm wondering what would be a good option, optics wise?  I don't have a megabuck to blow, but I'm not afraid to put money into quality, either.  Zeiss and Swarovski are pretty much out.

Any thoughts?  I've heard semi's are worse on scopes than bolts, any truth to this?

For your application, there is several choice.  the first optic that comes to mind would be the Leupold M3 long range tactical. it is an excellent optic with lots of feature at a very reasonable price at 800 dollars.

Second choice is my favorite, Nightforce NSX, This scope is super clear, excellent feature, and durable as heck for about 1000 dollars, you can the cream.

Third, is an Euro scope, Schmidt & Bender Police marksman is great scope for 1600 dollars, as far as I am concern, the NSX is just as good as the S&B but at 60% of its cost.

I've dealt with high-end optics in the past and there is something to be said for them.
But $800's way too high.  I'll put $300 into something (Found a 3-9 Zeiss that actually starts in that range) but $800-$1600?  Not a chance.  I'd shoot iron sights first.

The limitation here is still the shooter - and I bet most people with optics like that are in the same boat.  However, if their scopes make them happy so be it.  Thanks for the pointers tho.  I consider a $700 rifle with a $1600 scope on it in the same boat as a $2000 car with a $32000 stereo in it.  Sure, the car goes and the stereo's nice but.....

If you are not into high dollar scope, then you might want to consider Leupold 3-9x40 Vari-x2 scope at about 300, or Tasco Supersniper for about the same price but the Tasco is fixed power. both are excellent scope for the price.

I have not had a chance to try the Weaver Grand slam, but i hear good things about it.

go to www.swfa.com to see what is available to you and pick oput the ones you like and member on this board can give you thhe pro or cons about them.

Appreciated.  I think barring horrible review I'll go with that 3-9 Zeiss.  It's really more a hunting glass... but it'll do in a pinch :)

Right now I'm going to go with Rock River's A2 upper 20".  However, I'm putting away for a true hunter (coyote-be-gone?) for 200 yd work.  I find 6-9x about right for this work.  I MIGHT look at more magnification IF I feel it's needed.

Here in the DFW area 200 yard shots are about as common as finding a $20 stuck in your McDonalds burger at lunch.
