A friend of mine insists on doing things for himself, even when he doesn't have a clue about them.

He plans on using the bend and hammer technique on the brake until it "twists" off!!  I told him NOT to do this because it will ruin the rifle and crown.  He then plans on "installing" a fake FS on the barrel to be legal.  The rifle is only a year old and I'm shocked he'd think this as okay to do.  He's just so cheap, he won't send it in to have it professionally done.

What should I tell him???  He's gonna destroy a perfect AR!

I know it's sad!  He mentioned tonight he might just hacksaw it off, but I can't talk him out of it....yet.  I'm gonna try to get him to have it done right.  He's just so cheap, and thinks it will come off without a problem.  Then, he says he'll drill and tap a new fake A2 on.  I don't get it.  He's never done any gunsmith type of work before.

He wouldn't even have the gun if he didn't get it from a friend for a really good deal.  He just doesn't really value anything.  What do I do?

He'll learn, it will cost him more in the long run.

If he ruins the barrel, maybe he will give you the rifle for nothing or next to nothing.  You can then install a new barrel and have yourself a nice rifle for cheap, and he will be left with nada.

The world is full of gun animals. Here's one from experiance: Let him ruin it, buy it for $100, and re-barrel it yourself.

He'll learn.

I think I've finally talked him out of it.  This guy back in the 70s had a friend use a 10/22 to jack up his truck to fix a flat.  He then sold the rifle to someone else I know who was pissed when he found out, you only could tell when you looked down the barrel just right.  The guy who used the Ruger to repair his flat is now a mental patient in Washington state, he owns no guns thank god.

Anyhow, I reminded my friend of this story and told him it might do damage like that and not to take it off, however, I told him I might try and help pay for his switch out of the Mini-Y and an A2 fake suppressor.  Crisis averted for now.  It's kinda funny to think about, but not an AR!
