Hi folks, today I almost gave myself and people around me a heart attack at the range. I loaded my Colt AR15 (preban) with a 5 rd mag (30rd mag blocked to 5 , Canadian Law). The first 5rds went without a hitch. The second time I tried to shoot another 5rds, my AR went what it seemed to be full auto. The whole clip emptied in one sec. Since then, it fires 1 to 2 shots semi and the rest come out as a burst. Any ideas how to correct this issue? Plus sometimes the bolt stops half way feeding the next round. The round is loose in the chamber, and the mag can easily be removed, ie there is no pressure from the bolt on the mag. I removed the mag, the bolt still stayed stuck in it's place. I shook the round loose out of the chamber and it came out as well. What could be holding the bolt half way open? The bolt stayed 1/2 way open till I recocked the rife...any ideas or help will be greatly appreciated. I love this rife and I want to fix it :( I'm assuming cold weather should not be a factor with this problem. Thanks in advance Speckfire |

This is not a slamfire problem from your description. I'd take a look at the disconnector/spring and the engagement surfaces. Have you done a function check? http://groups.msn.com/TheMarylandAR15ShootersSite/functioncheck.msnw If it passes the function check then it could be a slam fire. But that bolt stuck halfway would be indicitive of a problem with the fire control parts, and I don't think the rifle will pass the Function test - which indicates you have problem with the fire control parts. The othe issue could be a FILTHY weapon that hasn't seen CLP in years (so much so the firing pin is glued in the bolt..) |
| I've got an sp1 that I bought in 88 I have had prob. since. 4 yrs ago got a puter and the first site I logged onto was this one. Read about good cleaning of fcg so I shot the thing with half a can of carb cleaner. Out flowed a bunch of black paint, my jams ended and the occasional 2rd burst. Instead every pull of the trigger was 3rds. Did function test and found my hammer and disconnecter were not operating right. Bought the parts 3yrs ago but due to having to take care of my aged parents, then there deaths and settling there estate the ar got put away until last fall. Replaced the hammer only and it now works great no slam fires. So do the cleaning and the function test. |

Hi Forest and Major1 I did the function test and it passed. But you guys were right about something. The hammer and disconnector might be the issue because when I cocked the hammer with the rifle open, the disconnector was flimsy enough for me to disconnect the hammer with my index finger and thumb out of place very easily. My L1a1 and AK was impossible to do so. So I think you guys are right about the hammer and disconnector or was it designed that way. Also about the bolt staying half open, could bad ammo do that? Thanks a lot guys for your input |

The bolt hanging halfway could be one of two things. Since it's a Colt, it's got that cutaway bolt carrier and notched hammer, so if the disconnector isn't holding the hammer back, and it's trying to ride forward as the bolt closes, it's going to hang the bolt assembly half open. In other words, it's doing what it's supposed to do[:D]. The other possibility is that the carrier key has loosened considerably and it's shifting to the side far enough to be hanging up on the edge of the gas tube. Given what you've already discovered about your firing mechanism, I'd say possibility one is most likely. |
| Thanks a lot for your answer Shamayim. Your explaination did clarify indeed as why the bolt is stuck half way. I'm ordering the following parts just to make sure I have everything covered. The disconnector, the disconnector spring and hammer. If I'm missing anything else, please feel free to let me know..by hook or crook I'm going to make this AR servicable again...(hands itching) :) |
| It's probably a good idea to get a new disconnector and spring, but it may not totally solve the problem. If the notch on the back of the hammer, where the disconnector hooks into, is worn enough, it might be contributing to the situation. When you get the new disconnector and install it, if you still get an occasional double, pull the disconeector, turn it over, and use a small finecut file to take just a little bit off the bottom flat surface in front of the mounting hole. This will give you just a bit more engagemant. It doesn't take much removal; just a few strokes. Less expensive than a new hammer, and just as effective.[:D] |
