When traveling I want to go "the extra mile" and place a trigger lock on my rifle (in addition to being in a case in the trunk).

Can anyone recommend a decent lock that won't harm the finish?

Thanks.

Don't worry about the lock.
If you feel compeled, just pull the firing pin and put it in one of the side pockets of your case.

Have you seen this article?

Trigger locks are useless on AR-15s as you can remove the lock in 3 seconds using just a paper clip, due to the hinged trigger guard.

I use this as a demo at a safety class I help  teach for my R&P Club.  Some firearms are better off with 'alternative' locking devices.

Personally I like the locking magazine block, and the cable lock.  Either will do fine.

Thank you for the information guys - I really appreciate it.

My efforts to secure the gun itself from firing are in the event that an overzealous police officer ever felt that an AR-15 that is unloaded and cased in the trunk of my car was not good enough.

Does the magazine lock create the potential for any damage to the bolt and carrier group or the magazine catch?  The only downside I can see is that it looks exactly like a magazine.

I'm not so sure that the police would react kindly to seeing that.

No, that is the nice thing about it.  Note, if you pull the upper off (while the lock is in place) you won't be able to put it back on properly (till the lock is removed).

I much prefer this to the cable lock.  While there are several advantages to the cable lock (you lock the upper to the lower, you can secure the rifle to some immovable object, and its cheap) I don't like it when the bolt gets caught in the cable coating and I have to fight with it to get it free.  (don't use uncoated cables or you can dammage the upper).

I like it - makes the package look nicer if its being displayed ;).

Haven't had that problem yet - though it is EASY to see there is a keyed lock on the bottom.  I was more concerned about the Range Masters at my club - but even they figured it ou w/o getting worked up.

I was given two mag locks for Christmas. They are very nice. Trigger locks can be taken off. Cable locks are just a pain. Mag locks are the way to go.

Now if I could only find a mag lock for the glock 21.
