Tomorrow I am putting a down payment on my first AR. I chose the Bushmaster XM15E2S A3 20 inch barrel. My local dealer said he could sell it for $825. I cant wait! He said it would be here in 4 days or so as soon as I give him $200 down. Is this a good deal? Best Regards! Althor |

It all depends if you HAVE to have a Bushmaster. (Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against the Bushmaster.) Olympic Arms has kits available, which you can put together your own AR for around $525 after purchasing a stripped lower through a FFL dealer. They have several styles and options available. I would personally go this route for the shear pleasure of knowing that I put my 1st AR together myself. It also helps to know if something goes awry which parts may need to be adjusted or fixed. Just my 2 cents worth. |

If you have limited experience with AR's or M16's (like I did) then buying a complete AR was the way to go. With the cleaning, firing, maintenance, accessories, and participating in this site, you'll soon learn quite a bit about your Bushmaster. Then with your next AR (I'm sure there's another in your future) you might find that you want to build one yourself. I bought the 16" Bushy version of what you're getting. It's a blast! The only problem I've had is that sometimes the empty casing doesn't get thrown out of the weapon before the new round is taken from the magazine. I bought and installed a heavy duty extractor spring from Wolff, and I hope that'll fix the problem. |
| I have many other guns, but have never built one. While I would love to do so in the future, I just want to get used to the gun before buying one to build. My next one will probably be a 16" carbine from a kit. I have been reading this board and doing research for several months now and cant wait to actually have my own AR! Thanks for the replies! |

i agree with bmvjethead. even though im rock river dedicated thats not a bad price for your area. fire the heck out of it and when the bug bites you for that 16" barrel, and it will, you can go ahead and build your next one. ive only had my first ar for about a week or so now and already the bug has hit. the first was a 20" like your except i got the dcm version from rock river. now i started gathering the parts to build my second. i for one dont see the big deal of 16 vs 20 inch barrels in real life. not much longer than one of my fingers. a lot of folks get all wrapped up about carry ability and combat effectiveness like they are going to save the world from destruction. chance of that barrel length making a difference when the threat of civil war is unlikely is probably zero. to me trying to pull the rifle out of a closet to defend my home seems extraneous when a shotgun or my sig would be a better choice. the gun just gets shot on a firing range like a bolt action anything else unless you join a club and do some action shooting which again a tenth of a percent of people who own ar's do. in that case the barrel length of the 16 may help. for me when the rifle gets built it will carry an m4 barrel. it will because i just like that look |
