I was seeing a new product at the gun shows and in mags called the buffer- tech bolt buffer I was wondering exactly what it does and is it a valid must have for my babies.  Any help would be much appreciated..... Shane

Not for an AR, it's in no way necessary.

The shok-buff is designed to prevent metal-to-metal hammering such as a 1911 experiences.

Spend your $$$ on ammo instead, IMO.

I just looked this thing up. It's 10 bucks, and it replaces the end piece on your recoil buffer. The piece that impacts the very rear of the recoil tube.

The only real interest I have is protecting the lower receivers threads for the buffer tube. I'm not sure how much force is hitting the rear since it is being slowed down by the recoil spring as it travels rearward.
I don't like the idea of drilling on the buffer though...

This is just a replacement item of perhaps a softer material than the factory. The original buffer already has a hole drilled and pinned.
On a full auto gun a soft buffer bumper will compress with firing and rate of fire will increase as the magazine is emptied.
