I am trying to decide which 9mm upper for my AR-15 Pre-Ban lower.  I would like to know which is best?  OLYMPIC 9mm or M&A's 9mm Upper?  Does anyone recommend either?

Opinions appreciated!

I am biased,  I have the Oly system.  But I did so because I researched the options and found that the Oly system offers more bang for the buck.

One gets a 9mm AR because it is cheaper to shoot.  It does not recoil less than a .223 model (heavy bolt carrier), isn't really any lighter, and the 9mm round is not as effective as the .223 in terms of its wounding capability.

That said,  cheap shooting is what you are after. The Colt system is reliable and nice.  BUT it falls down when you factor in how much each factory Colt 9mm mags cost (about $100 ea.) which is totally ridiculous.  There are other options for mags in the Colt system,  but they are not worth a damn frankly.

The Oly system (using the Socom mag block) is almost bomb proof and doesn't seem to suffer from the quality issues that their .223 brethren have.  But most importantly, cheap Sten mags at about 3 bux each.  If you get 10 mags,  you almost have enough money left over for a case of Ammo compared to buying just one Colt mag.

Do the math.

The Oly is better if you intend to switch often, because it is fairly qwik-change.

That being said I prefer a colt system using modified Sten mags when making the rifle dedicated to 9mm. This is because you are able to use the original mag latch and won't bump-drop your mag as can happen with a SOCOM block. If you use Oly's pistol mag block then this does not apply.

Go with the OLY.  I have one and love it.  Whenever I can't go to the outdoor range, I go to the pistol range and shoot my AR.  I love the look on people's faces when I shoot it.

Get the Rock River 9mm upper!! That way you have a Colt system 9mm and you can use Colt 9mm mags that work with the bolt catch, or you modify a magwell adapter to use the cheap Sten mags @ $2 a piece, or you can use modified UZI mags with the standard magwell adapter. I am using Sten mags and they are great!! I would stay away from the Olympic personally. I have a preban Olympic and it shoots great but for the money and the different options in mags go with the Rock River 9mm upper.

Kaliburz,

The pics didn't come out... can you try again? I'd really like to see your Cav Arms/ASA carbine. I thought the ASA uper used Uzi mags, or do they now have one that uses Sten mags?

Thx,

-Greg

He made it use Sten mags by modifying the magwell adapter.  The 1st thread in the pistol caliber forum will explain everything!!

Well, heck, it worked when I posted it originally...

Well, here's the link to the album in Yahoo.  There are a lot more pics there.
