I noticed my buffer is solid plastic. The M16's I shot in the Army had metal buffers with a rubber piece on the end. Is the plastic buffer a better/newer version or just a cheap part used to cut manufacturing costs? Would it be worth replacing the plastic buffer with the metal one?

Thanks

You hit on it: saving money on mfg costs.

I wouldn't sweat it unless you're getting some major wear marks from the b/c hitting it.

What brand is your AR?

It's a Colt. There are few dings in the plastic face. Nothing major yet.
