I would appreciate any information on how I could obtain a lightweight 20 barrel AR15 in 223.

The AR's I have handled all weigh around 9 lbs without optics.

My perfect AR would be a flattop with 20" lightweight barrel and full stock. I have no need for pre ban.

Is there any such rifle?

Easiest way to get one is to buy a 20" Hbar (it will weight 8.5 lbs) then send it to Kurt and for $55 (plus shipping) he will turn it into an A2 profile (meaning the rifle will weigh 7.5 lbs).  You could also check with Gunsmoke Enterprises (www.ar15.tv) and see if they have any A2 type barrels in stock - if they do they can build you an upper or rifle.

If you want the skinny A1 profile I'm sure Kurt could do that for a few more $$.  Otherwise you could get an old 1:12 twist lightweight barrels from Fulton Armory.

If you want to talk with Kurt click on the Industry section at the top of the page then scroll to the bottom - look for Kurt's Kustom.

P.S. I had Kurt convet my 20" Bushmaster HBAR into a A2 profile barrel.  It look & shoots GREAT!

I tell you what I did. I went on Ebay and bought a like new Colt SP1 slab sided upper for $250. It has a preban thin 20" bbl. and triangular forestocks. I happen to have a pre ban lower but if I didn't I would trim the bayo lug and replace or cut off the flash hider/threads to make it post ban.

Because this upper does not have the bolt assist or shell deflector it is quite light. A2 fore stocks are lighter than the old triangle ones and would make it even lighter.

I am thinking of swaping my 16" light barrel onto the SP1 upper to make it even lighter.

If you want just a lightweight 20" barrel, I think I saw one at the Model 1 Sales booth at the local gun show this past weekend. They have alot of barrels and uppers not listed on their website.

At one time SARCO advertised new complete M16A1 upper assemblies. Perfect if you can live with the 1 in 12 twist.

If you have a really lightweight upper you might as well get a really lightweight lower.

I thought my pre-ban Colt lightweight match was light until I placed a post-ban Colt lightweight match upper on a Cav-Arms lower.
