Faxon: Another vendor provides a table of the maximum sustained rate of fire for there barrels over different durations. As in 1 minute, 5 minutes, 30 minutes to avoid accelerated throat erosion and gas port erosion. I would love to have something similar for your barrels. It would also be nice to have a table of expected poi changes during sustained fire.
It occurred to me because I recently built a rifle around your stainless pencil weight 16" mid length and now I'm questioning whether it was the right choice. Might should have gone with the shooter profile. I'm not done testing it yet so hold back on results to date. To be absolutely clear I don't believe there is anything wrong with the barrel. It just might not be right for my usage and quantitative application information would have been helpful. |

We considered the above, but it runs into the usual gamut of problems by there not being a standard specification for rates of fire, ambient temperatures, type of ammunition, etc. Unless we define every specification, which is always subject to an arbitrary decision, the table is frankly unreliable. The second point to the request was the expected POI changes. As a fully stress relieved barrel, the POI should not wander as the barrel heats up, but the shooter may notice groups opening up. As a general rule, groups will open up to about double the base barrel accuracy while warm and stay there until cooled. So, if a given ammo shoots MOA or less, it will generally shoot 2 MOA with the barrel warm. For anyone shooting heavily enough to be concerned about barrel temperatures, we will always recommend the GUNNER series. Further, stainless does not fare as well to heat as steel, so it may not have been the right barrel for the application, assuming you are heating barrels to red-hot. |

Thanks for the reply. I have not got the barrel red hot. Desired maximum rate of fire where I'm concerned with long range accuracy would be in the neighborhood of 20 RDS per minute. Still thinking Gunner profile? Desired mechanical accuracy around 2.5 moa. The pencil barrel can easily handle that requirement. 2.5 MOA is a large group. |
