i am thinking about building a purple AR for one of my daughters.  if I bought an ALG purple rail, is it possible to cerakote the upper and lower to match?  or should i just buy the ALG rail in black and have all three pieces cerakoted purple?

It's probably possible to get very close, but more than likely it won't match perfectly due to the shade. I would just buy the black and coat it with the other parts, that way it will match perfectly and I would imagine if you are going to coat the upper and lower already it shouldn't cost that much more to get the rail done as well.  Just be sure that whoever coats the rail masks off the bore for the barrel nut. This is very important because of how close-fitting the two parts are. The thickness of the coating is more than enough to make the rail impossible to get back on.

If you want a uniform color then it's be best for it to all be done at once. I, however, am in the camp that likes some varying shades. I think it'd be cool to cerakote the receivers and have factory anodizing on the handguard.
