Question: can I swap a RIS ii M203 bottom panel for the RIS iii bottom panel, giving me a pic rail on just the bottom of my MLok RIS iii?

Not sure why I would want to do this, just wondering if I can…

Joe mentioned in his RIS III announcement from January (Page 1 of this same topic) that you can:

12.5" for 14.5" barrels as well as anything with a rifle length gas system like a MK12

EXACT same bolt up plate and barrel nut

RIS II Lower Rails (M1913) can be installed on RIS III body if you want to.

M203 Compatible just like legacy RIS II Handguards.  M320 Compatibility w/ our adaptors (MIL only at this point)

Only available on complete rifles for starters but will be sold separately later on in the year.  All Lengths.  Black and Brown.

Joe

It's not a bad idea - personally, I don't like using M-LOK to mount vertical grips, which is why I like rails such as the Noveske NHR (which have full Picatinny rails running the length of the 6:00 and 12:00 positions). Being able to use a RIS II lower rail section on a RIS III body seems like something I might actually do.

I would be all over that if it was the 12.5”.  Pretty much the only thing I’m waiting on for my tano build at this point.

Speaking of the 12.5”.  Can anybody verify that the RIS III is .25” longer than the RIS II M4A1 (supposedly 12.25” in length)?

Intermediate - Maybe but would definitely require the removal of the M203 hanger bracket.

Rifle Length - No.  The handguard is rifle length so it'll sit behind the gas block on RL gas systems.

Any idea how much the 12.5” Ris iii rail weighs? I know it’s been said it wasn’t much lighter than the ii,  but I’d like to know the weight. How much lighter than the ris ii? Thank you

It's beautiful. The RIS III is the best looking handguard on the market. Mine won't be here until Wednesday. But thanks to you, it's coming! I'm pumped. I've never been this excited about a new gun part before. I wanted a RIS II for years but availability sucked big time, and I moved on from quad rail handguards. I was excited the moment I saw the RIS III announcement and have been waiting ever since.

The RIS 2 in your picture is 9.5” but your RIS 3 is 10.5. Are you putting that RIS 3 on a 10.3 barreled AR?

If so, I’d be super interested to see how much the muzzle device protrudes from the handguard…if the 10.5” RIS3 can be used on a 10.3” barrel and enough of the muzzle device protrudes to still screw on a suppressor I think that’d be awesome!

I'm using a DD 11.5 barrel with the new rail. I'm not sure what your setup is but I don't think a 10.3 barrel in the 10.5 handguard would work with a can unless you have a crazy long muzzle device.

@FailureToFun

My handguard came in. All I can say is that it's a work of art. I did not have time to setup my vice and do a proper install with the torque wrench, so I did a quick test fit. The barrel is a virgin 13.9" Triarc midlength barrel with an SA adjustable gas block. I'm going to send the barrel off to Adco to chop it to about 12.5" (maybe a smidge longer) so that the Xeno adapter fits as flush as reasonably possible with the handguard. I'd have done it before hand but I needed the handguard to take a final/accurate measurement.

@alien soild looking rifle brother. ADCO has done some solid work for me in the past.

Here is what I have so far. 11.5 DD barrel, 10.5 RIS III rail, DD receiver, toolcraft BCG, modlite PLHV2, M4SDK, with a FP peq 15. waiting on Trijicon to get done making my TA02 to add on to the upper and mount my P2 at the 12 O'clock. really excited to get everything put together. It will make for a good all around GP rifle that has active and passive NV capability.

Pictures are of an older RIS II, the newer ones are darker, have black screws, and have a larger hole in the front.

Attached File

Attached File

RIS II is 2.23" wide and 2.25" tall

RIS III is 1.96" wide and 2.16" tall

MK18 RIS II is 393 grams

RIS III 9.5 is 369 grams

The RIS II bottom rail fits on the RIS III but the RIS III bottom rail does not fit on the RIS II.

ETA: With the RIS II bottom rail, QD sling swivels won't fit. Also, M-LOK screws that are too long will hit the bottom rail.

I like that the screws are hex and slotted now but they seem like they can easily cross thread compared to all of my other RIS IIs.

I can't wait to get the other 3 rails. I will post pics in a year when that happens.

That's weird...I own a Daniel Defense M4A1 made in 2015, and I previously owned a MK18 made in 2020. The MK18's RIS II rail was much lighter. My impression is that they've gotten lighter over time, not the other way around.

Interesting, and yeah, I'll take your word for it, since I'm working off a smaller sample size.

One thing I notice with the RIS III: It seems as though all of the FDE rails have very different anodizing on the rail vs. the bolt-up plate. It makes me wonder if DD is sending the rails and bolt-up plates to two different sub-contractors for the anodizing.

Just bought my first Daniel Defense rifle.  It's a DD4RIII.  First impressions is it's a nice rifle.  It has ambi controls and appears solid.  For the money, I think it could come with a much better trigger.  The one in it isn't good at all.  I would kinda expect it from other brands, but for what is touted as a high end rifle and the dollars spent, it's disappointing.  I also dislike the furniture, but that's easily changed.

I'm assuming one can still buy the quad rail, which is the RII?  I'll have to look into getting one of those as I prefer them over Mlock.

I haven't shot it yet, but am hoping for an accurate rifle.  I hear the DD barrels are very good.
