Hello. I just got my stamp back for my DD Mk18.

I took it out for it's maiden voayage today and ran into some problems.

While firing it the stock collapsed into the next hole. I fired it again, went into the next hole, this happened until the stock was all the way collapsed. I was at the range where I bought it from so we tried another stock, same thing happened.

I put my friend's Mk18 lower(we bought them at the same time) onto my upper and it did the same thing. One of the range staff tried it. It did the same thing to him.

I put a MOE stock off my other SBR onto my Mk18 and it worked fine.

Any ideas? Maybe an stiffer spring? I am kind of bummed because I love the new furniture, but I can't have it collapsing on me.

I forgot to add. I tried to push or slap the stock while holding it against table and it held fine. It only happened under recoil.

I also was shooting it with my SDN6.

Thank you for choosing Daniel Defense.  I am very sorry for the issue that you are experiencing with your buttstock.  It sounds like there is a defect in the latch mechanism.  We'd me more than happy to replace your stock.  Please contact Caroline Britton, Warranty Administrator, at 912-851-3217 or [email protected].  She will issue you an RMA number and arrange for the exchange completely free of charge to you.

Very Respectfully,

Joe Marler

Left my stock with the dealer I purchased it from. They have had no luck getting any help from customer service. They were supposed to get a call tag, but have not. Any suggestions?

They aren't trying hard enough. DD customer service is very easy to deal with.

ETA: he told you who to contact directly. Why is the dealer handling it?

My dealer is handling it because it was not working out of the box. We took it out for it's first range trip and it would not stay in one position, it would collapse under recoil.  That was on a Thursday.

They called on that Friday, then again the next week. They could not reach Caroline, they finally called a sales rep. They then got an email, that I read stating they would get a stock out and call tag would be emailed after filling out a form. Still no call tag.

Interesting I've called DD a few times and never had a issue with a question being answered or getting a RMA, maybe holiday busy season is catching up to them.

Good Afternoon OP,

I am sorry for the troubles you've had so far. Please shoot me an email and I will check into the status of this RMA when we return to work on Monday. I will need to know the dealer who is handling this on your behalf or the RMA number given in the email stating a tag would be on its way.

Again, I apologize for the inconvenience this has caused and will be sure to get it taken care of as soon as I get back in the office.

Thanks and have a very Merry Christmas!!

I went to the range with my brand new Daniel Defense M4 Carbine, V5 LW.  Having the same problem with the stock collapsing when fired.

Is it OK if I jump on this thread?

Come on in.

I think there is s problem with the stocks. The three mk18s from my LGS all did the same thing. Still waiting for a resolution. The detent spring seems way too light.

For now my brand new DD is sporting a MOE that works fine.

I'm glad you posted this, I thought I was doing something wrong with my v7 with the new style stock. Ive only had it out twice but both times its done it to me, both on  the bench and standing.  Cant reproduce without firing.

Ill call DD monday. Glad im not the only one, but I dont have another stock on hand if I have to send it back. I like the new stock, so I hope they get this sorted.

I believe there was some similar discussion in the forum early on when the new DD stocks were released into the wild.  Maybe these were out the door before the problem was discovered.

No one was picking up the phone in service (I think it goes to Caroline) today either. I was able to reach someone in product info who directed me to submit a return form via the Daniel Defense web site. I have not heard back yet.

To be honest, I'm surprised I had this much difficulty reaching them. I keep hearing about the stellar customer service but so far it's not been impressive. I'm hoping it's just bad luck and not a normal occurrence.

I think it may just be the results of the holidays and their shutdown for christmas. Running "bare bones" till the new year. Happens in my line of work as well.

I had no issues when contacting them in July (not a product problem, rebate thing)

I'll call tomorrow and leave a message if i dont get thru. Will post results.

Alright, just received the new stock from DD. I have not tried shooting with it yet, but here is a picture comparison I made of the old one (labeled "Defective") and the new one they sent (labeled "New").

I highlighted the observably different pin in the new one, which does not have the widened protrusion like the old one. If I had to guess, this protrusion is the cause of the defect, since it probably prevent the pin from going as deep into the buffer tube holes. The new stock also fits *much* tighter, almost too tight, which I guess could be a good thing.

I cannot confirm that the problem is fixed, since I have not shot the rifle with the new stock.

DD also sent a free Daniel Defense hat, which was nice of them to do.

my "defective" one's pin does not look like yours, see below. I also noted the new one is quite a bit tighter on the tube, which i like. I dont seem to ever need to move it around. I might be able to sneak out this weekend and see if it holds in place.

Mine works fine with a Magpul Moe and CTR as well as MFT minimalist.
Collapses every time shot with DD stock.

My DD replacement should be here this week. If it does not work, I will give up and install a LWRC pdw stock.

Recoil,

This could be a result of the original stock damaging the buffer tube which is now causing the good stock to slip. We will be glad to get the lower in house and replace the buffer tube then ensure the new stock & buffer tube function properly. Shoot me an email and we can get this taken care of for you. Thanks and I apologize for this inconvenience, I know it's frustrating

I've had a similar issue with my MK18. However out of the 2k+ rounds I've shot it's happened three, four times. I usually just reset it and it runs like a champ.

If you're using the rifle for defensive purposes, what happens if the stock collapses when you need it most?

Same with any other malfunction... Adapt and overcome. I get what you are saying but, for me, it's not an issue. I will take a look at my stock and if I feel it needs to be replaced I will contact DD.

Just an update for anyone following the thread. I got my lower back from DD, they replaced the buffer tube and put 20 rounds through it without collapsing. However, during my range trip yesterday, the problem was the same as before - the stock was collapsing after 1-5 rounds. Shots were made from a bench rest as well as off hand.

I contacted Caroline and we're trying to figure out the next steps.

I got my replacement. They new one does not collapse but is VERY tight. I have to put the muzzle on the ground to collapse it.

I give up. Using a cheap MOE for the time being.

Mine was very tight as well, I have to grab my handstop with one hand the the stock release with the other and squeeze to get it to come in for transport. Pulling it out seems easier. I am not sure that this tightness isnt the reason its not jumping, as my pins looked the same, as i posted. Dont blame you for going with what works.

My replacement stock was super tight too. Like, I need a lot of strength and both hands tight. However, it is still collapsing and is now much looser, operable with one hand.

I have a theory on why it's collapsing. When you fire off a round, the buffer rapidly goes into the buffer tube. During this process air that was in the buffer tube gets displaced, like in a syringe. Some of this displaced air, I believe, escapes through the holes in the buffer tube. The DD stock's closest point of exit for this air is the detent pin. I think if this pin is tight enough, it acts like a piston, and the air pushes it down towards the latch as it escapes, causing the stock to collapse. I think if there would be holes in the stock before the pin, or in the pin to allow air to pass, it would solve the issue.

That's my crazy theory anyways.
2/11/2015 4:33:17 PM EDT
[#45]
This might part of the reason they are so tight, air pressure? like a suction cup/pistol thing on the whole buffer tube. I wonder if a couple small holes towards the rear of the stock would allow venting. Not quite like the slots on a MOE/CTR, but same idea. If mine ever collapses again, Ill try this first before i contact DD.

Good thought.

Another update, hopefully one of the last ones on this issue

So as I posted earlier, the second round of fixes by DD, the replacement of the buffer tube, did not resolve the issue.

I have agreed to send my lower to DD for the second time. I got it back yesterday, and the problem was due to the stock essentially being out of spec. The major difference I can see is that the stock pin spring is much tighter. I would say at least double the tension. The stock now snaps into each position with much more authority than before. I think this is definitely a good sign because when I compared the spring tension on the previous DD stock to the tension on several Magpul stocks and a DPMS stock, the DD one was noticeably weaker.

I still need to take it to the range to verify that it has been fixed, and I will post an update once I do so.

Also, DD were great in really trying to fix the issue. I can tell they're really trying to stand behind their product and are in no way dismissive of the problem. Caroline was very pleasant to deal with, and they offered numerous options for dealing with the issue. They even did overnight shipping both ways this time around to minimize the wait time.

I hope they keep their stocks tight. Mine are tight and it's nice not to have a rattletrap stock.
Just spray with some silicone spray and then wipe the extension after the stock has been worked
