Just took delivery of a new LAR8 standard. I want to change the butt stock and hand guards. The stock hand guard is the 2 piece with a slip ring that holds the guards in place. Does RRA offer a half or quad rail that will fit this slip system? Also, why do all the hand guards say
gunsmithing required? Do I really need to take it to a gunsmith? Thanks |

They don't have a drop in replacement (quad or half quad) for the standard handguard. You can use a Magpul MOE handguard (I believe there is some slight heat shield modification required) and attach their rail pieces as desired.
If you go the quad/half quad route, you don't need a gunsmith. I've heard the LAR-8 barrel nut is sometimes very, very tight. I would recommend getting a LAR-8 upper receiver vice block if you intend to install the rail yourself. |

no mods are needed to use the magpul handguards . if you want a free float rail rock river arms , daniel defense , jp rifles all have free float handguards that will fit . the barrel nut will not interchange with dpms or armalite so you need to make sure your getting the rra nut. the barrel nut is tight it has red lock tite on it you need to heat up the nut to around 450-500 degrees to get the nut loose and a receiver block is essential along with a barrel nut wrench.
hope this helps. |

Thanks for the responses. I just read online that Midwest Industries makes a two piece quad rail that will replace the stock hand guard. I ordered one last night and will post the results after I get it. Thanks I don't know if you'll have the necessary gas tube clearance (it's "taller" in an LAR-8). Please update once you've given it a try. Steve/RRA |

OK....just received the MI 2 piece Gen2 Handguard Quadrail. Fought it for over an hour. The length was about right, the gas tube had clearance but the ends which fit top and bottom just didn't line up and were too fat to fit. The slip ring wouldn't fit over the end of the handguard. I guess I could have shaved the rail end's but it just didn't seem like it was meant to be. This was an install on a LAR8 "rifle" and I had read where someone installed on a carbine with no issues. The MI is listed for a Armalite AR10 and I thought it might work on a RRA but it didn't. Oh well. I'll keep looking for a two piece.
Best to all. |
