Sorry for the newbie question you've probably all heard before, but I need a little info and advice if some of you don't mind. I picked up my  LAR-15 mid-length last week, and am interested in replacing the handguard with an aluminum drop in 2 piece. In looking for options, I think I'm getting conflicting info about how long the mid length forend is. On the tape measure, it appears to be right at 8-1/2", but I didn't measure it when I had it off the rifle. Can someone confirm the length? Brownells lets you search by length, but I think there is only one 8-1/2" shown. I can't believe this is all that is available.

Also, are there some reccomendations on forends you guys could point me toward? I really think I want a drop in replacement, aluminum, that doesn't require any mods to the rifle. I may feel different later, but free-floating is not important to me. All the mounting rails are not required either. I don't really forsee a ton of accessories being mounted on my rifle, although this may change in the future also. What I really want to do is eliminate the plastic/heatshield forend with a better looking aluminum version. Any advice would be greatly appreciated, and thanks for your time.

For drop in handguards, in a midlength, I've had good luck with the Armalite ALOSTYR.

They are also a site sponsor here.

Ok, I found them on the Armalite site. The midlength is listed as 8", which must not include the parts on each end that go under the cap and delta ring, right? My stock handguard is 8" without the ends. Thanks for the help.

There are four standard lengths of handguards, based on th elocation of th egas port in the barrel, which dictates th elength of th egas tube, location of the front sight housing, etc...These four lengths aren't normally measured with a ruler, but by their classification (pistol, CAR, Mid, and Rifle-lengths).  Theoretically a mid-length handguard of whatever make should be able to be installed on a barel configured for a mid-length gas system.  The physical measurement of the handguard itself is going to differ based on what type it is, how it is installed, what type of barrel nut is used with it, etc...

Yeah, I think the parts that lock it in are not included in the measurement.  It's just what the available space is that you can use.

Ordered the Armalite handguard today. Thanks for the help. I'm sure I'll be back for more shortly.
