| I have a 18" rifle that I bought during the AWB, so it has the pinned fake flashider. Recently I decided to turn this into a full on open gun so I want to put a different brake on it. Since I am unlikely to ever want to go back to the stock brake, what method is the best to get the pinned brake off with the least amount of heartache and the least chance of damaging the existing threads? Also, I am ASSUMING that the threads under there are standard.... Right? |
| I say send it to ADCO and have them chop the barrel and re thread. You can take the brake off with a dremmel and some patience, but it is time consuming and the risk of damaging the finish on your barrel is much greater. This is why I use Titanium or Stainless pins in my fixed brake applications. I've found that if I grind off the spot weld, the pin usually just comes right out. Using common steel, the weld will sometimes melt the pin to the brake. |
| Ok, one thing I am not willing to do is cut the barrel. I want to re-use the existing threads [assuming they are standard]. The reason I posted this in RRA's forum is I was hoping to get some confimation as to how this thing is attached, and what I can do to remove it. I remember there were threads about removing the perm FH when the ban ended, but that's been years ago and my search fu is weak... |

Adco
About the 3rd pic down is how adco does it. Seems pretty smart, chuck it in a mill and take out the top of the pin. |

Quoted: Hmmm, $40 to do it for me...that's mighty tempting...but then I have to find a box, pay for shipping and insurance, and spend a couple of weeks worrying about what the retarded gorilla theat delivers my packages is going to do to it... Which is all mighty cheap when you think about it. That's what the shipping insurance is for, as well. First $100 value is free, and then only $1 per $100 of declared value after that. An old ban-era barrel isn't gold. ![]() |

I agree it is cheap, hence the temptation... but the jacaksses that deliver things in my area... they routinely leave "adult sig required" deliveries just on the step, at the wrong house, etc. I had a Savage Stryker returned to me from having a brake installed and the jerk just left the gun on my porch and forged the signature. I tried for 2 months to get him fired, but nothing ever came of it. Even though I could PROVE I was 200 miles away, working on a jobsite, he swore it was me that signed for it and then left it on my own porch.. So now everything goes through my FFL buddy, even things that don't legally have to...
It *IS* gold, because it's an 18" RRA that is one of the best shooting uppers I curently own.. Back on topic, though, it seems I should be able to grind part way in where the weld is, and maybe get the pin to fall out? |
