Hi,

If I order an LAR-8 now, when will.... Just kidding :)  I've read a million posts, and all they ask is when will it ship.  I get that it will be a few months.  Keep up the patience Steve, must be rough.

I'm new to the AR scene and after research decided on your LAR-8.  To the point, I have several questions if anyone can enlighten me.  I do plead ignorance, but hey that's how you learn right?  I also have spent a lot of time looking these issues up and looked back 10 pages in this RRA forum.  Also read through the whole 23 pages of LAR-8 ordering posts.

1.) When you remove the carry handle/rear sight from an A2, is there a picatinny rail left underneath?  In other words, can you easily mount a scope on an A2 rifle with the carry handle removed?  Would the front sight interfere with a scope at all?  I've heard it won't.
I plan on mounting a scope, but all things being equal I would like to be able to have the BUISs from the get go, as oppose to buying them later with the A4.

2.) The Standard 20 inch barrel comes with a regular A2 buttstock.  When supplies dictate, can I later buy the 6 position tactical CAR stock that comes with the Mid-length?  Are they compatible?

3.) I'm pretty sure about this one but to verify, it's chambered in .308 Winchester as well as 7.62x51 NATO?  Just making sure I can buy the Milsurp stuff if needed.

4.) Is the handguard on the mid-length and standard LAR-8 free floating?

5.) These are to help decide either 16inch vs 20inch.  I notice the MOA listed is 1.5 for 16in. and 1 MOA for 20in.  Is the accuracy difference going to be noticeable?  I'd probably be mainly concerned with hunting deer 150-200yds.  And is the recoil noticeably better on a 20in. vs the 16in.?  I know recoil is subjective, but does is it noticeable between the two?

If anyone can answer or has suggestions, I'd be grateful.  I'm mainly trying to decide 16in. vs 20in. barrels, and was planning on the A4, but if putting a scope on an A2 will work just fine, then probably A2.  I know I'm in for a wait, but I like to do my homework and want to get what suits me the best.

I'll chime in first, as I'm onne of the few people to have shot LAR-8s in 16", 20" and even 26" variations.  Anyone who has one of the Mid A4s already out there, please post your own info as well.

1.  The carry handle on an A2 is integral to the forging of the upper receiver and does not come off.  A4s were invented (on .223) to better allow for optics mounting options and better results than an A2 platform provided.
2.  As we get ckloser to caught up, yes, a 6-position stock will be available as an option on a 20" model.  It will be nose heavy and probbaly a little awkward in some of the positions, but it will be doable.
3.  Yes, you can use Milsurp ammo.
4.  As cataloged, neither handguard is a free floted model.  The tubular handguard on the Varmint is.  It will be an option in both mid and rifle length. We will also have RRA and daniel Defense (and maybe other brands as well) quad rails.
5.  Accuracy is a matter of ammo, shooter, barrel (length, twist, gas port, etc...), etc...In this particular case, the accuracy potential of either barrel is quite good, but may be better out of the longer barrel that allows for a more complete powder burn and a longer time in the rifling.  It's a heavy rifle with a very substantial mass moving forwards and backwards in the form of the carrier group, regardless of barrel length.  I'm not overly recoil sensitive, and haven't been bothered by the recoil on any of the LAR-8s that I've shot.  To me, they have less perceived recoil than many other (non-AR style) .308 semi-autos.
Hope that helps.

No response necessary, unless it's someone else with their input (please do).  Just wanted to say thank you Steve. I have read a lot of posts and you've always been quick to answer and have carried yourself well, even in dealing with jerks.  It helps back my decision to go RRA, and was nice getting a few answers to some novice questions.

Seems now I'm set with an A4, just standard or mid-length.....hmmmm.
