I just wanted to report after last week's trip to South Dakota and my first prairie dog shoot. I took a couple bolt guns in .223 and .22-250, but did most of my shooting with a RRA 20" heavy barrel upper set up with a flattop upper and a RRA free float tube. The rifle is equipped with a Super Sniper 10x scope using Badger rings and a YHM cantilevered riser. I was able to make fairly consistent hits as far as 500-600 yds. Of course, I didn't hit on every shot, but I was amazed at the accuracy of the rifle. It was every bit as good as several bull barrelled rifles other shooters were using. |
We hunted on the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation west of Mobridge. We hunted with a guy from Wisconsin who normally runs a Pheasant hunting operation, just doing p-dogs as a sideline. |

I have a couple RRA rifles, a 24" EOP that has been my main P-dog shooter for the last 5 years. I bought a CARA4 this year and put an Eotech on it for the walk around gun. Both guns have ran flawless. The carbine shocked me as I was able to easily hit the dogs at 100+ plus with the Eotech. My EOP has proved very accurate with many loads. I use 55 gr Vmax for Pdogs and have been able to connect at 600 yards with them. I haven't had time work up loads for the carbine but using the same recipe as the EOP with a cheaper soft point bullet was very accurate. With the results this year I don't think I'll waste any time trying to improve them. I don't care for the heavier bullets, as they are prone to ricochets and usually only drills a hole in them leaving wounded p-dogs. It's designed for accuarcy not exploding the p-dogs. Here's a link to a thread in my HTF. This was my son's first trip so only 1 pic of a dead rabbit. Too many dead dogs to take pics of. ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=8&f=15&t=314033 |
