Finished my first AR recently and now I need an optic.  Need some advise.

I am looking to start shooting 3 gun and am trying to decide which optic to purchase.

For 3 gun, would you recommend the 1x4 or a Micro dot (possibly with a flip to side magnifier)

Leaning more toward the Micro since the majority of targets will be closer in.

Advise/thoughts???

Thanks,

Alden

1-4X is more popular for three gun. Some will add a Micro Dot on a offset mount so they don't have to dial down as much. There are exceptions but most find a magnifier behind a red dot slower to get on target and not as precise.

I haven't done any serious testing with it yet, but my 1-4 is what I'd go with. It's not QUITE as fast in really close, nor in low light, but the minute you start looking out 25 yards or more it's better. It's not quite as wide and bright a view as things like the leupold mk4 cqt or the other high end 30mm short range optics, but it's still very good and the money saved can be spent on practice ammo that will do more to improve your scores than the more expensive optic. I've used the Mk4 quite a bit, while I'm impressed with the quality and theory, in practice I'm not a real fan due to the changing eye relief and relatively short eye relief at 3x. I haven't yet, but my cousin who owns it has caught himself under recoil a couple times. At lower magnification it's incredible, but at 3x you're pretty darned close.

The dot on the 1-4 is the only part that lights up, and at least with a fresh battery it is BRIGHT. So you get a very nice fast reference dot plus the bold three lines for general reference.

I've got mine on a larue extended mount and am quite happy with the setup. I wish it was lighter, had less dark area around the view (this seems to be the primary area of improvement as you spend more money on these types of scopes) and shorter would be nice. But, given that the next step up was almost 4 times the money and my life does not depend on this optic day in and day out, I am very very pleased. I'm holding off on a real review until I've got more rounds downrange with it.

The micro's great, but I'd rather have it on an offset mount with the 1-4 than by itself with or without a magnifier. That's actually why I wound up getting the 1-4.

eta:If it's anything like my other two PA sights, the brightness will be holding strong six months from now on the same battery and then I'll forget to turn it off for a couple days. Gosh, PA included a spare battery in a little spot already on the scope so even when I mess up like that I'm still covered.  Unlike a red dot, even if I don't have time to change batteries I'm still good to go, another advantage to the 1-4.
