I purchased a complete 16" PTAC mid length upper with a 1:7 barell on the black Friday deal. It was delivered on time, and with the nice weather I finally got it out to play with it. Fit, and finish is fine. Shoots well, and cycles no problem. I do have one MAJOR issue with this upper, and it seems to be an odd one. The rail on the upper seems to be out of spec, and seems a bit narrow. I have an Aimpoint Pro that I tried to mount on the rail. With the stock Aimpoint mount, there is a knob you turn and when it's tight you click it 3 more times for proper torque. When I place the Aimpoint on the PTAC upper, it is visible that the base of the Aimpoint is about 1mm wider than the PTAC rail. I can tighten it down, and the wedge on the mount bottoms out on the Aimpoint base, but the PTAC rail being narrower does not allow the clamp to grip the upper and it is loose.
I tried the Aimpoint on a Rock River upper and it tightens down just fine, and there is no visible difference between the base and the RR rail. I then tried it on a Colt upper and that one also was the same as the Aimpoint base. The PTAC upper has the "Square" forge mark, and I am happy with the rest of the upper. I just want to be able to mount the Aimpoint on this without having to drop another $150 for a different aftermarket mount. Is there something I can do to get this right? |

I hope you can get PSA to make it right for you...
I have several AR15 uppers I purchased from PSA, and all the ones with the "square" forging mark on the upper have sloppily machined (off-centered) uppers. There is more metal on one side of the center cut rail than the other; this is an issue that has been discussed here many times, and it is not just with the PSA uppers. The manufacturer's say it doesn't hurt functionality and is more aesthetic. Take a look at the rear opening of the upper (with charging handle and bolt carrier removed) and see if one side of the upper is thicker than the other; hence, more metal on one side of the upper than the other. Also, you can look at the bottom of the upper around the mag-well area; the same thing will apply; the metal on one side is thicker than the other. The way it was explained by some of the manufacturers is that the machining of the upper begins with the top rail, and every other dimension is cut based on the top rail. So, it doesn't/shouldn't matter if there is more metal on one side than the other. My AR uppers with the "A" forge mark, or the "key-hole" forge mark seem to be machined more evenly and precisely than the ones with the square forge mark, for better or worse. Here is that thread... Upper forging issues Good luck. |

| Just a followup. I called customer service and they sent an RMA for this upper. I am anxiously awaiting the replacement. This upper was very nice, and I had a hard time sending it back in as the barrel was rollmarked, it shot better than I physically can, and had no finish issues whatsoever. It also locked up tight to my Palmetto lower. But the reason I bought it was to mount an Aimpoint Pro, so it went back. I did do an upgrade as a nice daily deal just came out today with the FN chrome lined barrel, so for a few $ more I am upgrading. Thank You PSA! |
