Is it possible to receive just the parts without the assembly? I tried to take out the taper pins to install freefloat but could not manage to get em off....

No.

I just got my taper pins out last night. Seemed easy to me.

Make sure the upper has no play and is sitting level (I used 2x4s) and get a wide punch to get things started. 2 moderate blows with a regular hammer and mine were out.

I took the taper pins out of my PSA upper a few months ago and it was easy. OP, are you sure you're trying to pound them out the right direction?

use a small sledge and an oversized punch to get it started

I usually wrap the upper in a towel and knell down with one foot on thee barrel and wack away (the taper pins are thicker on the ejection port side)
