I ordered a BCG on 3/28.  SKU 30956  Order number 100265996 and the bolt is not marked.  I think I got the wrong one.

Please confirm  the one I ordered should have M or MP stamped on it somewhere.  Somebody from Palmetto please get in touch with me.

Thanks.

I "think" it is this one... http://palmettostatearmory.com/index.php/m16-bolt-carrier-group.html

PSA doesn't put SKU# on the product page, but if you add the item to compare, it list the specs and SKU.

Look hard.  I can't see the M on my bolt when it is lubed. It is a little tough to see.  YMMV

PSA please answer here or in my PM. Mine aren't marked and I don't want to use them until I know (so I can return them as new condition not used).

EDIT: I am 100% wrong.  The markings are extremely faint but they're there. My apologies PSA.

Mine is unmarked as well. Specs listed "Milspec MPI Carpenter No. 158® steel bolt." Tag for PSA response.

Mine is not marked either. E-mail sent to Palmetto.

Just received mine that was ordered on the 14th. The bolt is marked with an "M". Inspected and looks great.

If you ordered a MPI BCG, please look very closely- I am told the "M" is there, just potentially very faintly etched.

I just looked at mine very closely outside under the sun with a magnifying glass and there is not anything marked on the bolt at all.I sent an e-mail yesterday, still waiting for a response.

x2. I looked with a magnifying glass under various lights with the bolt both oiled and dry - no marks on my bolt. I also sent an email on Monday upon receiving my BCG and have not heard back yet.

SKU # 8784

Order # 100306552

No (M) mark that I can see and I'm not sure of the gas key argument but mine appears like the others that are complaining.

Thanks for sorting this out for us

Here is what our guy said:

The bcgs with the sku 8784 were not advertised as mpi marked.  They should not come with any markings at all.  However, we have sent m marked bolts to substitute when we ran out of unmarked.

The mpi bcgs that were advertised as such are sku: 30956.  These should be marked m or mp.

The 8620 bolts we are currently selling are deeply engraved with MPI.  These are not to be substituted in any way for the 8784 or 30956.

This is the policy I will be following from here on forward.

Thanks for the clarification, PSA. To prevent further confusion I would suggest you remove MPI bolt from the description of the "M16 BCG". It's not in the top description like "MPI M16 BCG" but MPI bolt is described twice below in both SKUs.

I have the unmarked bolt but am satisfied with your answer if the unmarked bolt is Carpenter 158 steel, not 8620 steel. Can you say definitely that all the 8620 bolts are marked MPI and ALL the unmarked bolts are Carpenter 158 steel? Or better yet if there is a slight difference in weight between the 8620 and Carpenter 158 bolts can you give both weights. (The unmarked bolt I received weighs 1.5 oz with extractor, the same as my BCM bolt.)

Thanks as usual for providing a quality product at a great price.

The sku 8784 was advertised as MPI. Here is the image for the google cache of the webpage. Same url as the current 8784 sku. The other sku's have different urls.

I also have an issue with the staking and questionable material of the gas key. I ordered the 8784 sku on the 26th of april. I have sent an email with my order number and a picture of the problem. Just trying to see if I get a faster response here. Metal at one point is pushed completely over top of the screw.

I think this pretty much sums up what I had to say.    I can understand a mistake but don't tell a lie to cover it up.

Edit by PSA:

The bcg's were not advertised with any specific  markings. The web page description was clarified to help future purchasers, after this thread showed the possible confusion in the description.  We apologize for any inconvenience.

It seems the gas keys that are numbered between the screws are softer steel, thus the heavy staking. I have to say that's ugly staking!

I'm very curious who actually makes these BCGs. PSA mentioned YHM and Daniel Defense for 3rd party BCGs and I'm fairly sure these aren't DD.

They're probably "YHM" which actually is CMT/Stag. CMT is a huge military supplier and PSA said the BCGs are from a military supplier so that adds up. CMT also sells MPI and unmarked Carpenter 158 bolts. The unmarked ones are batch tested and all the MPI bolts are tested.

Yeah, the staking is pretty bad. The raised 4 also makes me question how the gas keys were manufactured. I have never seen a machined key that has raised lettering. My bolt does have an engraved M on it though. From the other threads it seems these bolts have been a hodge podge of parts.

Like I said in previous threads if anyone wants a staked gas key I have my own jig and would do it for free for you. Just pay the $5.80 for priority small box flat rate shipping and then the $5.80 to send it back and I will stake your gas key and have sent back out asap.

If you do not feel like waiting for resolution, etc....

Also if you wanted the permatex #4 sealant on the gas key I can put that on there also I have a ton of it. I also normally have a bunch of Chrome lined gas keys, with Grade 8 socket head cap screws on hand.

And I got it the other way, perfectly staked unnumbered gas key but non-MPI bolt!

Thank you for the generous offer. I'm going to give PSA a day or two to resolve the issue. Between my post here and my email, I hope to hear something soon. If that doesn't pan out then I will take you up on your offer. Could you please IM me the details. Thanks again.

So are you saying the bolts are not marked but ARE MPI  tested?  Just because you changed the description now doesn't change the fact that the bolt I ordered was supposed to be MPI tested.

Can you post a pic of what the deeply engraved MPI bolts look like?  Are you saying that ALL of the bolts with the three letters MPI are 8620?   Did you guys ever have a bolt that had MPI engraved that was carpenter 158?  Just trying to figure out what is in the rifle I purchased from you all in Feb 2013.

Ok,  so the 8784 BCG was sold as MPI carpenter 158 and was actually tested?  just not marked?    I assume the bolts were tested in bulk and not marked?

Honestly, I was unaware these were outsourced and not a PSA manufactured item.

There is not that many companies that Mil carriers and bolts......You would be amazed on how many tool/mil companies make these parts for AR business's. One mil can make them for probably 10 different companies, hence the shortage of BCG's the most during the panic phase and you can almost say still today.

Maybe I should have said house brand instead.  Meaning that they put their stamp on it and stake their name on the product.   I mean this not as a slam because I like the products PSA offers but most of the time an unmarked or unnamed product is of lower quality.

I don't think PSA even knows what they are selling.

Either it's marked or it isn't

Either it's tested or it isn't

From my understanding sku 8784 was batch tested. So some of them will be stamped, and some of them won't. But since that isn't very fair and most people would want a stamp, I'm trying to recall back as many unmarked ones as I can and get them swapped out.
