Seems pretty pricey.  If these are indeed pricey, where's are the good places to look for rifles similar to these?  Shotgun News doesn't seem to advertise these anymore...

Not if you're patient, and watch the want ads of the largest paper in the state, and go to gunshows looking for some individual carrying around an AR.

Snacko - I concur.  The prices are high.  I have seen R6601 rifles, NIB, on this board for $1,300.  Sancho makes good recommendations.  There are also a number of reputable sellers in the equipment exchange if you have an FFL available to take delivery of a rifle from out of state.

Here's and example:

Bought Colt Model R6601 the day after Christmas for $1000, with 1346 rds of ammo, 8 stripper clips, ammo can, Owner's Manual, after market sling, 2 5/20 rd Colt mags, 2 30 rd OKay Mag, and SKS Nylon Case. No BOX.
Sold the 2 Colt mags for $68, and the upper for $475.

Installed complete Colt 20" 1/7 A2 upper (with A2 Compensator and Bayonet Lug) and standard push pin I already had. Figure I'm into it for $480, not including the parts I already had.

Just yesterday, someone offered me a pre-ban Bushmaster for $1000.

Earlier this year, I had another oportunity to by a pre-ban for $900.

It depends on what you want.  If you want an AR with a heavy barrel, flash suppressor and bayonet lung, maybe.  If you want an AR that will shoot and feel the same as a pre-ban, no.

For these prices you could buy post-ban 2 AR's.  Then you would have 2 different configurations(i.e. 20" and M4).

If you were going to buy a preban, I would recommend an SP1 because of the lightweight barrel which is currently availale.

My thoughts,

I purchased my 6601 several years ago for $600, and I have seen them sell (on average) for $1400.  I just purchased a DPMS lower the other day for $119, and today I ordered the rest of the parts for my 2nd rifle for $417 with shipping.  That brings the total to $536 for a new rifle, and if you really want something on the end of the barrel, they make some nice muzzle brakes that you can have put on.  I do not see a reason to shell out that much money for a pre-ban rifle.

Thanks to all who have contributed :-)

It appears that ~$1000-1300 is the number to shoot for for a Colt 6601 preban.  The key factor is condition, with $1300 for the upper end of the scale.  I'll keep my eyes open for something in this range.

Thanks again...
