Colt really dropped the ball. I'm glad I have the lightweight barrels I have, from the lightweight 20" A1 barrels to the lightweight 16" barrels, they are the most fun to go shooting with. My 2 rifles with A2 profile barrels and the 1 carbine I have with an M4" profile barrel are way more likely to just sit in the back of safe. They are just a bit too front heavy and don't really do anything better for what I need the AR to do. If I want to go hiking up the hill out back I'm taking one of my carbines with the 6720 barrels. |

| Seems like the 6960 is the successor but better all-around. It's almost exactly 6 lb out of the box, and has a free-float rail and a midlength gas system. The barrel profile isn't quite pencil but still lightweight, and it balances quite nicely. |

Accountant Yeah I wish they would sell the uppers separately. Brownells has the LE6960-CCU upper with a slightly different rail but it's constantly out of stock. |
| I got an sp-1 carbine off a rack full of LEO marked 6920’s for half of what the 6920’s were going for, that was in 2011. The model R6001 were only made for 5 years. With all the sp-1’s being stripped for preban receivers, retro parts, and bringing high premiums in ban states… I wonder how many original carbines are still out in the wild. |

In this video, he goes through the history of the lightweight carbine variants. There is barely a mention of the 6720 at the end. Compared to the numbers of the 6520 (which he claims was made for 23 years), and Colt's "flagship" the 6920, the 6720 truly does seem to be that "late variant" just not made in the quantities of the two most popular variants. That's what I mean by "rarer than I thought." Before starting this thread I'd have thought it was a staple of Colt's product line. He doesn't address whether or not it was discontinued. If anyone cares, I finally got ambitious enough to pull the handguards off my "shooter" 6720 and the barrel stamp says 07/18. I bought it in 2019. The date is a bit of a surprise. I was expecting one much older, but it proves that the last batch of AR15A4 Lightweight LE Carbines was new manufacture and hadn't "been in storage" for years. The upper is marked 13629 as well, so that's a clue, too. But I considered the possibility that these were put together from a combination of old and new parts.Attached File |
