Humble brag…I’ve two of them NIB that I picked up at a LGS back in June of 2014 when I was in Colorado. I broke them out today and damned if they don’t have the best Colt black finish and deepest roll markings that I ever recall…and the receipt in the box says I paid 899.00 each plus the governors sales tax…lol. FWIW both are low to mid 4,xxx SNs. Tell me you can smell the pictures ![]() Attached File Attached File On another note this little philly was resting on top of them and insisted to get into action….pony is not as deep as we’d like but the factory ODG is the best I ran across when they came out circa 2012/2013…It’s not a 6720, but a LE6920MPG-ODG with Magpul furniture. Not part of the discussion but wanted to share as you don’t see too many of them in the wild Attached File |
I began to understand that the body is actually a cage for the soul, rather than a liberator....a vehicle of expression for our souls to interact with the physical dimension, little more.

I bought mine about 3 years ago from Clyde Armory in Athens Ga. Was made in 2009. Your right about the beautiful deep roll mark. |

All lowers marked Lightweight are 6720's? Barrel is marked 02/2016 on this one. Found it a few months back in a pawnship in AZ. Attached File |

Huh, I never knew they were not popular. They seem to have the best combination of features. Mine is s/n CAR00148X so I guess that was produced relatively early in the production lot. I don't remember what I paid for it new. It came with a Rogers Super Stoc stamped with Colt Defense on it. I thought I would ditch the stock but I grew to like it. It also has beefier handguards (M4?) than it should as I prefer the slim guards on my old 6520. ETA: It also came with a Matech rear sight. It is metal and other 6720s I have seen used Magpul flip up rear sights. |

Assuming you don't have a grenade launcher, they do have the best combination of features. A 6920 obviously feels more muzzle heavy. When you compare them to a 6933, they feel about the same even though the barrels are 4.5" longer. The only thing I wonder about is the thin barrels impacting group size. |

The only thing I wonder about is the thin barrels impacting group size. It hurts to even type the words but I don't have a grenade launcher. The pencil barrel ARs I have had have always shot well. The only modifications I made on the 6720 was to ditch the A2 grip and install a Geissele trigger unit. The trigger made the rifle much easier to shoot. I also put on an Aimpoint Patrol optic and that made the weight pork out a bit. My son has discovered ARs and for some reason he wants to build a Retro A1 Vietnam era rifle. I wish I hadn't ditched all the piles of stuff I had when I scratch built my first AR back in 1986. I tried to explain to him that the A1 sights were not great but at least the old ARs were light weight. The pork fest ARs of today are a mystery to me. My nephew is a Marine and he told me his service rifle with all the doodads was pushing at least 8 pounds- maybe more. |

I have a 6720 barrel that I had cut to 14.7” on a c7 upper, repop n1 stock and skinny handguards. It’s about perfect for a lightweight KISS rifle. |

Once I shot mine, I actually "got it" how nose heavy a standard M4 is and how it basically sucks for ease of pointing. I can just imagine how much worse the heavy SOCOM barrel is. But, hey, sometimes you gotta experience things for yourself and not just follow the crowd. I still have a couple of standard Colt M4's, just because I hate to part with them, but for a SHTF weapon I'm grabbing the 6720. |

It was insanely front heavy, so when the 94 AWB ended in 2004 I went to swap it out for a 20" A2 profile barrel and it made a world of difference (at the time I didn't think it could get better). But, I started getting into 20" A1 profile pencil barrels and I also got couple 16" 6720 barrels and they are by far my favorites. Sure, I still like my "clones" that have 20" A2 profile barrels, but I wouldn't really want to go take a long walk with them. |

Fortunately, I was unsuccessful. https://i.postimg.cc/wMrrgrGx/AR6520-over-AR6720.jpg I had a cop trade-in 6520. Loved it, but it nagged at me that it had the fixed carry handle and the 6720 was more "adaptable" with the flat top. At the time I only had the one 6720, so....sacrifices had to be made. I sold the 6520 to buy another 6720 because Arms Unlimited had either told me over the phone or had a disclaimer on their website that the 6720's were in short supply. I didn't know at the time I was probably taking the opportunity to purchase one of the last ones made, but that's apparently how it turned out. I have not seen any advertised since, nor have I seen just the upper on sale anywhere. |

Has anyone seen one that looks laser etched? I picked one up a few years ago and didn’t see another one until someone posted a picture of CAR003462 with the same markings and fonts here. It’s not on Colts serial number lookup, but I don’t have the greatest luck with that search tool. Maybe someone liked the 6720s so much they faked some up? Attached File |

I do have a pic of a 20” a4 roll mark that I believe is a preproduction that was toted around to shows that has a hybrid rollmark. It’s all stamped except the “AR-15A4”. It’s a completely different font than what you have posted. I have no idea how Colt does there serial numbers because I’ve seen some things over the years that didn’t make sense on other Colt rifles but as a reference my 6720 is around 1000 over that serial number and was bought somewhere around 2014. Do you have a full pic of that side of the lower? |

Does the lower has the usual unmachined area aka sear block? People making clones usually don’t clone that part of the lower.. |

It was slightly used, but nothing struck me as being off about it other than the different “rollmark”. Why would someone fake a carbine that apparently not many people wanted - at least twice. I found the pick posted of the other one, and will repost it. |

| My personal AR6720 was obtained in early 2014. (Wilson) barrel date of 02/13 It is CAR00410x. It is 100% rollmarked. Everything . I wonder if they had some unused numbers and used them at a later date. My lower has a factory scratch at the pivot pin boss which I have seen on other colts as well. |

I sent in a Colt archives request thing to get a letter of confirmation. I won it from gunbroker fairly cheap I think - maybe its questioned legitimacy made others not bid. I’ll keep digging for the dang thing. I can’t find the archived thread that had #3462’s picture in it. I was hoping someone out there would have another one or know of one. Maybe someone was trying to see how light they could make the rollmark and still be legible. Lol Disappointed in myself for not taking more pictures the last time I had it out. |
