Quoted:
It is a Colt Sporter made in 1971. The left side of the mag well probably has CAL .223. That is what it is chambered for and that is what you are supposed to shoot, not the higher pressure 5.56. The Colt AR15 barrels are chambered in 5.56, both .mil M16s and civilian SP1s... |

Guess I might be wrong. I was only a little over ten years old when that rifle was made and have never owned one of them. I was just going by the pictures of the receiver of a rifle the same model. They said .223, and I have always thought if it was chambered for 5.56 it would be marked as such.

| Like I said Osprey, I made a mistake in assuming that the rifle was a .223. I do not own an older (or any Colt AR) and mistakenly assumed since the rifle wasn't marked 5.56 (and any 5.56 ammo at the time was being used to make the body counts that I was being informed of on the 5 o'clock news in 1971) that it was .223. Cut me some slack, I have been shooting and collecting WW1-WW2 rifles for many years and just in the past couple decided to see what all the fuss was about with the mouse guns. I am still learning. |

My very first ever AR was a 1971 SP1 that I bought new that year (for only $200 back then), they're chambered for 5.56 and the .223 cal. on the lower receiver we Colt guys just ignore, I've shot a lot of XM193 ammo on mine without any problems.
Also back then the Colt mags already have 5.56 markings on the floorplates. The only SP1 rifles I would worry about using 5.56 are the early sixties models. |
