Just wondering what the difference between a Colt 6920 M4  and a Colt SOCOM model? I see that the SOCOM has the troy rails, but other than that they look and seem the same, AM I missing something in my older years?

The barrel has a different profile, the safety is different, the roll mark is different, and the buis is different.

The standard is a M4 barrel profile, standard selector lever (reversible), the receiver is marked M4 CARBINE 5.56MM, has a standard Matech BUIS/ Magpul BUIS, and comes with M4 fat hand guards.

The SOCOM is a HBAR barrel, It has an ambidextrous selector, the receiver is marked M4A1 (no caliber marking) The Matech BUIS is marked Picatinny and comes with either a KAC or Troy drop in rail.

ETA: Thanks Fonty. You're right. :)

Also comes with an H2 buffer

Then there is the SOCOM II, which replaces the KAC/Troy carbine length hand guard with Daniel Defense RIS II FSP.

You sure about that? Or is it a medium profile?

The 6920SOCOM profile is actually really neither, though it's closer to a medium contour barrel Colt does refer to the barrel profile in their model numbers RO921HB - LE6920HB (special run precursor to the SOCOM) as an "HB" - or "heavy barrel."  Obviously, it's heavier than "government" profile.

Hence why everyone has kind of adopted the stance of just calling it the "SOCOM" barrel, since it was originally developed for SOCOM.

IMHO, it's still a superior barrel profile than the government profile, but it is about four ounces heavier.

I am a fan of the SOCOM barrel, whether Colt or BCM. To me it just feels "right."

Technically, the Colt SOCOM barrel is not marked "HBAR" and other barrels are.  It's the M4 heavier barrel. I don't know if Colt makes an M4 profile front to receive the launcher and marked "HBAR" -W

Latest editions have Troy.  That would not keep me from buying it and then putting a DD rail on it.

Love my SOCOM.

I'd buy one if I could find one in stock

The Colt 16" SOCOM barrel cannot receive an M203, as it does not have the flats machined forward of the chamber.

(OK, if you really wanted one on without mods, you could pull the FSB and reassemble it all together, but good luck with that. )

This afternoon I was pleasantly surprised to discover that one of our local gun shops has the LE6920 SOCOM in stock for $1090.  They were the "2013 configuration" with a Knight's rail, two 30-round GI magazines, MATECH BUIS, GI butt-stock, and M4A1 marked lower receiver.

They now have four left in stock.  Pictures to follow.

Yeah that is about what I found out. No way am I going to pay $400 plus for a  Socom Lower, the PSA blem lower for $129.99 fits it perfectly and goes band every time I pull the happy lever!!!!   Besides this one is just a truck rifle.

It depends, the first SOCOM's had Knights rails, then for around a year they were produced with a Troy rail.  Colt recently (last month) produced another batch of SOCOM's with the Knights rail.

Dang! This sort of makes me sad, because I bought mine a couple months ago and of course, it had the Troy rail. (Though, honestly, I bought it at my local shop that I usually buy from...and it was the only Colt AR they had in stock...and really had no idea about the differences in tail being a AR newbie.)

And I just bought some KAC rails to replace the Troy rails that came with it. So...ended up spending a little more overall and have to hope that my rails are real. (Probably post a picture of them once I can.) Though I did buy them on e-bay, I have a strong feeling they are real after researching the seller prior to purchasing. (Thankfully had $100 in ebay bucks to blow.)

Would a 6721 be closer to the SOCOM with the heavy barrel?

No.  The socom I, and socom II are closer to the socom.  The 6721's barrel is 1/9 twist vs the socoms 1/7,  also the socoms barrel has the M4cuts on the barrel.   The 6721 rollmarks are AR15A3 vs the socoms M4A1.

I wasn't too concerned about the markings but the twist on the barrel would make a difference.  I was just thinking since they both have the heavy barrels it was a closer match.  I like my 6721.  I turned it into my "race" gun.

I stumbled across this article from May, 2014. it says the Army is converting its M4s to M4A1s by adding a heavier barrel.
Would that be the same barrel profile (except in 16") as the Colt SOCOM barrels?

The 16" socom barrel does not have the cut outs for the m203 under the handguards, other than that they are the same profile
