Let's take a look at history,
It makes sense. The original Colt 703 (pg 271 "The Black Rifle") was a piston in 1968 related to the Stoner 63 and 62, the AR18 and the Daewoo post K series guns. Since they were no better than the direct impingement they never went big. Direct impingement is really a misnomer. Direct impingement is a Hakim and the Swedish riflle before that. The M4/M16/AR15 is an inline piston with no op rod. Also check out page 326. The Taiwanese T65 rifle (1965??) is a piston gun that is the exact same system as the "patent pending" Adams Arms system. I guess that patent will be "pending" for a long time. There is even mention of a modified M16 gas system done by Winchester on pg 271. "modified rifles performed about equalliy to the current M16". The interview with Reed Knight in Small Arms Review also gives some insight to problems with piston systems. Don't beleive the hype. Stick with what works and what has been proven on the battel field. |

I think the piston thing is a fad that will pass also. have you guys seen the RHINO conversion from years ago? it has been proven and re proven that the piston system offers no real advantage over DI. and I really doubt it can be as accurate
I think the AAR from the guy in norway in the AR discussions shocked the piston boys a lot |

Especially the link off to the Mark LaRue smack down. I'm glad I don't piss anyone off on this site... |
its not just funny its hilarious. I followed it when it 1st started. I could actually hear the HK fans hearts break over the interwebs as he posted and shot down their excuses and BS one after another. I love being told a gun that is a few years old is so much better than another design with over 40 years of combat behind it and being proven in battle by over 90 countries. I really like it when the company is the one telling me. and the guy with one who just put a whole 200 rounds through it with no problems! same with the LWRC. what will they do with them if the company goes tango uniform next week? they do love their fads in the AR discussion forum

Just a observation and reading between the lines. I think the Colt gas piston is a victim of politics. Think about it, Colt just renewed another major contract to the US govt. and other countries How would it look to the senator, (sorry I forgot his name) that called for the dust testing. That Colt is selling a more reliable system to LE and civilians than to the military.
Colt's statement that the gas piston system is no better than the direct impingement is just them protecting their contract. |

I'm still going to stick with the direct gas system, only because I know it works. It does what I need it to do... The one thing that has made me want to try adjustable piston uppers is the fact that you can turn them on "silencer mode", which as I understand it, silences the gun a bit better. Also if .mil or .gov are going to make a switch from the M16/M4, I would imagine they would go with something that packs more knock down power than a 5.56mm. I could see them moving to something like the KAC PDW 6x35mm system. KAC PDW 6x35mm Link I wish I had one of those babies! |
