I have a line on a Colt AR15 A2 Sporter II, and want to know if the upper is correct for the rifle.  The upper has A1 sights, no forward assist or shell deflector, but with round hand guards.  Looks like an early SP1 upper to me.  What says the hive mind?

Sounds like a 6500 to me

+1 Seems like an early model R6500 SP-2.

I used to have a SP-2 but with a teardrop style forward assist, early model didn't have forward assist.

Later in their production they also had the shell deflector.

The barrel should be A2 Gov't profile, thin under the handguards, about 0.750 - 0.740" DIA at FSB to front of FSB, 1/7 twist and A2 round handguards.

One of the fisrt AR-15A2's, R6400 Sporter II, essentially an SP1 with an A2 barrel assembly and an A2 stock and pistol grip. I've got an R6401 that is the same configuration, except it has the forward assist.

I would have to agree with the guys, The gun is a first production run of the R6500 series SPORTER II. As production would continue in later models to this line the Sporter would retain the tear drop foreward assist. I have seen only one or two with A1 sights and the brass deflector just before Hantford released the HBAR and GM A2's.
