hi all,
please forgive my ignorance.
i have an old colt sporter lower sitting in the back of the safe that i'd like to build up. it's grey, has a collapsable stock and has a large front hole.
i'd like a flat top upper with a forward assist. naturally i'd prefer it to match the grey finish and have a large front hold. don't really care about the barrel because if i can't find what i want i'll replace the barrel with a 1/7 14.5" anyway.
out of the myriad of options, which colt upper should i be looking for?

thanks in advance,
regards,

One that isn't made anymore and when you find one for sell they go for $300 and up.

Towards the end of using the large hole uppers Colt did make a flat top in the gray. It was used on the "Sporter Competition HBAR" model. There may have been some marked AR15A2 (or maybe A3) Competition HBAR, but I don't remember.

They are out there. But they are expensive. Daniel's Defense made a run a couple of years ago and no longer make them.

Or you could use a small hole upper and the $6 offset pin Bushmaster sells. I'm currently using the pin and it works fine with no troubles.

That would be the way to go, any upper would do
Only problem would be the color match but Norrels Moly coat is a wonderful thing

thank you very much. you've set me off on my search.

i have one of the pin adaptors currently. i've used it to combine the colt lower with a lmt upper. it works ok. i just don't like the idea of having to handle small parts unnecessarily. if you had to open the upper up at the range and lost either the bolt or the nut you'd be boned.  that's why i want a large hole upper.

i guess i'll be looking for a sporter competition hbar. are there any other candidates/options from colt?

Nope. Just that one model from Colt. And it was for just a limited time, thus the high price when you find one.

If you know any machinists or good gunsmiths you have them look at a small hole upper and see if it's possible to mill out to the larger, offset hole and leave enough material to be useful. I don't know if it's possible, it might not be or we would problably hear more about doing this sort of thing. But it's worth a shot anyways.

Here is a link to the last one I saw here for sale

kinda pricy but it's just what you're looking for

Who knows maybe the buyer will back out on it and you can pick it up

Worth tossing out an email to the seller
