I have been communicating with a gentleman about purchasing a Preban Sporter Target model, which is officially known as a 6551.  Only catch is the serial number has a prefix of MH, which indicates Match HBAR.  I already called Colt to verify the manufacture date, and they tell me it left the factory in 1992.  They couldn't tell me why the lower was stamped as a Sporter Target Model with the MH prefix.  In addition, the serial number has a suffix of "A" at the end of the string of numbers. What does the A mean?  The gun is priced right to be a preban, almost too right, but I am scared of the serial number.

Any advice on what is taking place here?

Thanks,

Cope

If Colt told you it left the factory in 1992 then it's a pre-ban.  However, I would pay the $50 they charge to get it in writing!  If you have that you're good to go between now and September 14th.   If the Clinton Gun Ban expires it won't matter.

That's kinda what I was thinking about the status of the rifle.  I'm just wondering how common it is for Colt to use the wrong prefix on these things.  Strange to me. Thanks for the response.

Keep in mind that when dealing with Colt the only thing consistent is their inconsistency.

If you get the rifle, get a written letter from them….wait…..If the serial number is MH086020 below it’s a pre-ban.  There are plenty MH serial numbered pre-ban Colts out there.  In fact, I even owned one!  Yeah man, you have nothing to worry about.  You may have been thinking of MT or CMH prefixed serial numbers.  MH is fine if it’s below 086020.

Go get it!

Yes, I also say that is a good preban. I bought the same MH prefix two years ago.
I did the same research.

Thanks fellas.  I looked the number lists over, and was aware of the 86020 cut off on the MH prefix.  This thing is MH 014xxxA.  I hope that the A doesn't constitute an additional number, placing it at 140 thousand instead of 14 thousand.  At under a grand, I don't think I can get hurt too bad.

Under a grand is a good price. After a sunset, it is hard to say where the price will be. The one cool thing about a pre ban 6551 after the sunset is Colt doesn't make the 6551 anymore. You will have a configuration that if someone wants a new one, they will have to make it themselves. I'm assuming it doesn't have a bay. lug so about the only thing I might do to it would be to add that, but that is just me. Hopefully in Sept. this Serial Number BS will be gone and we can just worry about stuff like 16.1 inches and no full auto, like it was before.

The "A" does take it out of the range, but this doesn't mean it's postban, but just means that it's an unknown.  If you told Colt about the A when you called them, I wouldn't worry about it.
I have a Colt that the name doesn't match the configuration or serial number prefix.  I think these kind of mistakes are cool.
I think it might be John M that has a SP1 with a serial number suffix, but I believe his is an "X".  He'd probably know what they designate.
