I'm looking at the LT103 fixed rear, and have a question on the options available.

What is the difference between the A2 Aperture and the XS Aperture?  From what I have gathered, the A2 has the standard flip unit with the small and large aperture, while it appears the XS is just a single larger aperture, is this correct?  I will be using this with the standard front sight / gas block assembly, and do not plant to use and other type of optic on the rifle.  It will be replacing the flip up Magpul unit on this:

Thanks in advance.

No, the XS says it has large and small "same plane" aperture, but unless I'm mistaken I don't see this as necessary or much of an advantage.

The plain A2 aperture will be just fine and you'll be using the small aperture almost all the time. The large aperture is for low light or extremely short range, and you will zero and primarily use the small aperture.

Here's a pic of the XS rear aperture vs. A2

XS aperture was designed by Paul Howe.  The notched section is great for 25 yards or less.

Is there considerable improvement at 25yrds with the XS vs. the A2 small aperture? Isn't the large aperture suitable for >25yrd?
Wouldn't the $25 be better spent elsewhere?

If your irons are zero'd at 100 yards - you're going to shoot low at 7-25 yards.

This aperture was made to zero at 7 yards and be on at 100 with the small peep.

I was a believer after I took my first CSAT Class with Paul a few years back.  I was real skeptical until I saw it for myself.   I have the aperture on all my irons now.

I think it's $45 to buy it from XS ... $25 is sounding like a deal for me and I've been wanting to buy an LT103 for awhile - but didn't know it was available with the XS CSAT aperature.

Update: Ordering one right now with the XS aperture!

I guess I understand but aren't we talking 2" or 2.5" low at 7 - 25yd with a 100yd zero? With a 100yd zero you'll also be shooting low at 25 - 75yd.

I'm not trying to knock it, I just want to understand better, what's the real need for the XS rear sight? Is it target shooting, hunting, or personal defense?

It's not the CSAT rear sight (with the notch) but the same plane XS Rear Aperature. (Or at least that's what came on my 103)

The big benefit IMO is the 'same plane' design so there isn't a 2-3 or 4 MOA shift in groups from the small to large.
