I'm in the market for a new rifle and I am looking to purchase either the OBR 556 or the PredatAR 556.  I have been reading up on both rifles and I feel that I can't go wrong with either choice.  But with the possible release of a hybrid PredatAR/OBR in the near future which rifle would be the better choice?  My anticipated role for the rifle would be for patrol, range (distance/plinking), SHTF, general purpose rifle.

The only downside I can think of for the PredatAR would be the extended handguard.  Im not sure if the rifle would fit in the gun rack in my patrol car because the rack secures the rifle by the barrel.  I can't think of any drawback to the OBR 556 other than it weighs more than the PredatAR, but at 7.5 lbs it is not any heavier than any other AR style rifle.  Anyways.. I would appreciate any input or experience with either rifle.   I haven't been able to find a whole lot on the OBR 556, so any info on that would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks..

If I could only have one (thank God that is not the case ) I think I would want a hybrid... I do hope they release them in that configuration... When my PredetAR arrives, I will put a higher power optic on my OBR556, and have the PredetAR set up with a red dot or a 1-4x.

Since you've had the OBR 556, what are your thoughts on the rifle (pros/cons)?

Thanks..

It's a fantastic stick... the only con (and I use that loosely)  I could even remotely offer is the 10MOA built in to the rail...  For a GP rifle, the 10MOA is probably not necessary, and for a patrol rifle it may even be a hinderance.  I have to adjust my optic when running a close range course of fire versus shooting at longer ranges... that is not hard to do with my current optic, a red-dot would be more work.  Otherwise, the thing is a tack-driver.  I have not had the opportunity to play with the PST (except when it first came out of the box it was in the suppressed position, and it didn't cycle well without a suppresor- flawless when in the correct position), but when I get a supressor (soon) I think that will be a plus.

Costa discussed his custom PredatAR with OBR barrel in a video.  That video has since been pulled.

edit to add this.

FWIW, LaRue has made no official statement regarding the possibility of a hybrid PredetAR/OBR being available to the masses... there was some hinting about SHOT goodness, and Costa's comment in the video about 2012... Costa was running around RD with a 14.5 pinned OBR barreled  7.62 PredetAR though, and the video featured a 5.56 one...

I have absolutely no experience with a receiver/rail system having MOA built in, so could you explain the hindrance it might have for a patrol rifle?  If I am correct the iron sights are 0 MOA, so I would just need to zero them in (no problem there).  But would I need to do anything different when mounting and zeroing an Aimpoint RDS or a variable power scope on the OBR than I would on a regular 0 MOA upper?

Thanks..

The angled rail is intended to provide a benefit when shooting at a distance, providing for ones optic to be zeroed closer to the bottom of its mechanical adjustment range, allowing for more elevation to be dialed in... at closer ranges, this would have the result of the aim point being below where POI would be, and at extreme close range, the effect would be significant, particularly given the ballistics of 5.56.  That extra elevation travel is not really needed in ranges below 500m.  With a RDS, where you are not going to be dialing in elevation adjustments, this cant in the rail is useless, and forces one to use holdovers/unders  at ranges other than the zero range, more so than with a flat rail.  Under the stress that one might be employing a patrol rifle, this could require more brain power than available.

what mount would be best suited for the OBR light with an aimpoint micro? and a variable scope?

thanks...

If not using the RISR, and you want lower 1/3rd cw, the 660hk for the micro (using troy micro battle sights)... If you are using the RISR and standard height BUIS, the 660.

For variable the LT-104 will handle anything up to a 50mm objective.  You could also use LT-123 rings if you want something lower and have a smaller objective.  The LT-111 is slightly higher than the 104, but will align with NV gear

First off I want to thank everyone who replied in this thread and answered my questions through numerous IM's.  I couldn't make up my mind on which rifle to purchase so I have decided to wait and see if the hybrid PredatAR comes out at SHOT.  But.. to satisfy my "need" for a Larue rifle I placed an order with Alfred this afternoon for a PredatAR in 7.62  .

Thanks..

Alfred gave 6-8 weeks but also stated they would try and beat it.
