My nephew is the skipper of a Burke-class destroyer now on deployment.  He just emailed me with a pic of his Mark 38 25mm remote-controlled machine gun.  I wonder if Barrett is gonna make a civilian version.

And the 5" deck gun with the projectile in mid-air.

Is there actually anybody in that 5in. turret, or is it all fed and fired remotely?  If there is someone manning it there looks like there would be very little room.

Actually, I'm pretty sure this is a Bushmaster M242 chain gun made by Bell.

No idea who makes the remote turret....

The version I have experiance with was dual fed with either AP or HE rounds, could be fired at 200 rds per minute.

HE had a 5 meter kill radius, and traveled at a leisurely 3600 fps
AP fired a depleted uranium sabot traveling north of 4200 fps and would reach out and touch.....stuff.

Correct.  The Burke-class are missile destroyers, meaning they pack various missile systems, mainly ASROC, Tomahawk, and Standard.  That 5" gun is their largest conventional gun but overall they pack more punch than an older cruiser used to carry.

And about the machine gun, here is the caption that came with the pic:
ARABIAN GULF (Aug. 21, 2011) The guided-missile destroyer
USS Truxtun (DDG 103) fires its MK 38 25mm machine gun during a live-fire
exercise. Truxtun is deployed to the U.S. 5th Fleet area of responsibility
conducting maritime security operations and support missions as part of
Operations Enduring Freedom and New Dawn.

And just to give a little scale to the deck gun, a promo pic.  It's the ship's first full deployment and my nephew's first command:

It was a fun weapon to shoot. Not so much to clear jams from though. Kinda like lifting weights in the closet.

Fired remotely. There's enough room in the turret to get squished by the loading mechanism and that's about it.
