I just purchased a lightly used LaRue VFZ fixed BUIS because the price was nice, I needed a sight and I am familiar with the level of quality in LaRue products.
However, upon examining and installing the sight I became puzzled about the VFZ mount's utility.  Without the QD locking thumb lever that is common to most of LaRue's sights & mounts, a tool is required to uninstall the VFZ sight.  All of my other BUISs use either Torx, Allen or flat-heat screws to attach, which therefore also requires a tool to be used to dismount them.  But with the VFZ mount there is this extra ~1/2" lump sticking out from the right side of the mount.
If one is going to have to use a tool to dismount the sight, why not just offer a model that uses standard Torx, Allen or flat-heat screws in a traditional "clamp" style mount for a much more streamlined sight?  As a bonus, it would likely be cheaper to produce and might therefore now be within reach of more customers with smaller budgets.  And introducing more folks to one's product line, especially one filled with soooo many quality items, is never a bad thing.

ETA: While I'm thinking aloud, why QD on BUIS at all?  I understand on the optics mount as the sight may go Tango Uniform and need to be vacated RFN.  But do BUIS ever need to be dismounted quickly?

Redrawing the cad for a different unit takes time. Also makes different two body parts for the same style buis. The VFZ now uses the same parts that the rest of the non QD line up. Fewer parts to manufacture or buy and stock is my best guess why.

If LT did offer a different version that is like you suggest, it would be lower drag, higher speed for sure.

QD buis are nice when you want to run NV or magnifier. I can't help you on your other question.

the VFZ was meant to lower the cost of LaRue products for those who don't need Q/D on things like sights and scopes. I bought the VFZ option on my LT-104 because I don't foresee the need to remove my scope from the rifle, but being a LaRue mount I have the option if I so choose. VFZ holds just as well as the Q/D levers, but saves some cash.

Same principle?  I do realize a BUIS isn't put under the same stress for repeatability as something such as a magnified optic.

I don't think that redesigning the mounting system will make the sight any less expensive.  If you look at the offerings from Troy and Daniel Defense their both around $65, the Midwest Ind fixed rear sight is $80.

With the VFZ option your getting a more robust mounting system that's guaranteed to return to zero and it's the same price as comparable sights.
