Who is hand loading for the OBR?

What are your favorite loads and components?  What are you getting for accuracy?

I’m thinking Hornady 150 gr FMJ-BT’s (3037’s) with CCI #34’s and Ramshot TAC for a plinking load.

I have not decided on a long range load yet, give me some ideas.

I’m still waiting on my OBR, come on Larue, kick production into high gear!

175 SMK over 42.1-42.3 of H4895. I'm not sure what the final load will be yet, but it will be somewhere within that range. 42.1 and 42.3 both shot consistent 1/2" groups, so I'm going to try 4.2. too and see what they all can do over the chrono. I'll be trying 42.2 at 1000 and 1100 yards on Friday morning.

Still waiting on the call, so I can't give you any "recipe" yet.  I have some 167gr Scenars and 175gr SMK's that I'm planning on using with I4895.  The OBR was designed around the M118 (173gr) round.  Do a search for reloading data for M118 and it should get you pretty good starting point.

TRY THIS:

http://www.6mmbr.com/308Win.html

SCROLL DOWN TO THE .308 WINCHESTER LOAD MAP.

I'VE TRIED LADDER TESTING WITH THE BULLETS:

168 GR SIERRA MATCH KING

175 GR SIERRA MATCH KING

AND THE POWDERS:

RELODER 15
VARGET
TAC

THAT I HAVE ON HAND.

I CAN'T BEAT THE LOADS THEY'VE PUBLISHED ON THAT WEBSITE.

GOOD SHOOTING,

WES

The madness begins!

TAC worked well on the initial 175 gr. reloads as Wes indicated,  50 more rounds for the range today.

If these shoot well I will load up 500 more tonight.

If all goes well I am expecting my OBR on Tuesday.  I am already prepping brass.

I am used to loading for bolt guns does anyone have handloading tips for auto loaders?  I am already full length sizing my brass.

On hodgdons website they have a min max spec from 42gr - 46gr of Varget for the hornady 165gr sp I want to use.  What is the best way to work my way through the range?  Should I create 5rnd batches .3gr apart starting from min to max?  With the given range in the manual that would require 14 batches.  Is there a way to more efficiantly pick a load or loads?

I typically consult multiple manuals and/or sources to include the bullet and powder manufactures loading data if available.  Be sure to check max COL making sure your loads will fit into the mag.

Once I have a general workable load range I will start low and work up a load usually in .2 or .3 grain increments.  I try to narrow down the load range so I’m not covering 4 or 5 grains to start.  5 round batches will work to start; once I have narrowed it down I will go to 10 or 50 round batches.

Once I fire the loads I check for accuracy, chronograph data, and the condition of the fired brass/primers.

This has worked well for me, YMMV.

What Loader are u guys using? I'm tired of my single press. It worked fine when I was shooting a bolt gun all day... Now, I just click the trigger and i'm burning throuhg alot more rounds. I'm thinking either Dillon 550B or hornady LNL. Any advice? Cheaper the better!

Over the weekend I was working on a varmint load.
Loaded on a Dillon 550B that's over 25yrs. old!

SPEER 125 GRN. TNT
46.0 GRNS, VVOY 135
2.70 COAL
BHM BRASS
WLR PRIMER

Shot .75" groups, I am going to bump up another .5 grn. No pressure signs yet.
You think the OBR is soft on recoil? try these 125's, feels like my .223.
Function was perfect by the way. Will up date after more dvelopment.

I'm not an expert by any means, but I'm not happy with my Hornady LNL-AP.

I've had all kinds of minor, irritating problems since I got it about 2 years ago.

What kind of minor problems? The only reason i'm considering LNL over the 550 is because the auto indexing is a feature that keeps me from having to do extra crap. Not ot mention the LNL is the same price ast he 550 whereas the 650 skyrockets in price.

Extra crap ?  Stop it, I got three of those old RL450s from years back ... you get a nice rythm and get 'er goin'.

Well, I was pretty settled on the 550B. Looks like i'll end up going that route. I just need to get several die plates and several die sets and set them all up. I only plan on loading 3 rifles calibers and 1 handgun. .223, 243, and 308 as well as 40S&W.

I mainly load 308 because its so damn expensive and now that OBR is chewing up my whole stash O_o

I concur.  IMO the LNL is a pretty good progressive press 'kit'.  It takes work to make it run.  The new ejector mod is nice.  I wish that there was a better primer seating arrangement.  Get a little gunk down there and primers stop seating flush.  Then there's the case feeder.  I've had the blow molded tub warp causing all kinds of issues.  I've since reinforced the bottom with aluminum angle iron brackets which seems to have cured it.  Fortunately, I got both the LNL and feeder for about $500 new.

BTW I own page 2.

Well i've decided to go with the 550B. Alot of people says its the least amount of maintenance and probably the easiest to move (when I decide to move). They also said the Dillon is more compatible with other die sets which im' thrilled about. Lastly, changing die sets can be as easy as changing die plates if u get extra plates. I think i'm going that route. Thanks for all the suggestions. Now, does anyone know where I can get a good deal on a 550B ???

Dillon & La Rue = Both are kick ass people and products.
They are bedfellows.

NOT to say that Steve Hornady isn't,  just that you will not regret buying the Dillon for any reason.
