doesn't seem to work with mid-length gas system-need to know if it will fit between front of upper and fsb

The 9" rail is what you need if you have the midlength gas system and want to keep your FSB.

How easy is it to install the rails having no experience with disassembly?

There is a video on the website that helped me when I did mine. It is at the bottom of the linked page below along with printable instructions. This was my first build so I can't really compare the difficulty to anything else but it seemed pretty easy to me, and I'm no mechanical wizard.
