Have you guys at AIM had the chance to shoot this enough to form an opinion?  How is the gas key staking?

Thanks

I put one in my 16" rifle length "screw around" rifle earlier today. Staking looks good, gas adjustment is easy, the finish is pretty badass...

I've probably got 300 rounds through it so far, and I'm digging it. It's only real competition is the 2A lightweight carrier, and although it's a little heavier, it's also a LOT easier on the wallet.

Well I'd say it competes with the Gemtech SBC as well, wouldn't you?  The bootleg interests me cause it has more settings, rather than the suppressed and unsuppresssed of the SBC.  As far as I can tell the SBC is marketed as 5.56...I'm wondering if the bootleg could also benefit 300 blackout.

Did you experience less gas face?

The Gemtech is a standard weight carrier, unlike the Bootleg or 2A, and as you mention, it only has suppressed and unsuppressed settings. The finish on the Bootleg feels slicker (subjectively)... And the Bootleg also looks cooler.

My luck with the Gemtech carrier was nothing to write home about, but I typically run the gas system out as far as possible for barrel length. On an M4 or MK18, the results would have probably been better.

It definitely helps with gas-face. I've got a Griffin Recce-5 can on a Voodoo 16.5" rifle length, and the blowback is pretty ridiculous with a regular old lightweight carrier. With the Bootleg I could cut it down to nil, just using a regular old BCM charging handle. No more looking like a chimney-sweep after a few mags.

I ran an RCA lightweight with an adjustable gas key for a while with good results, but it was a pain to tune it correctly with that locking screw arrangement. On the low-low setting with the Bootleg it won't lock the bolt back without the can with PMC commercial crap from the 90's. Full open is definitely a "I'm firing frozen dog turds from 10,000 feet above sea-level" adverse-conditions setting. I had no trouble convincing my filthy rifle to run with the aforementioned PMC with the gas wide open.

As it is, recoil is about like a cheap pellet rifle with just the bare-ass (no comp) taper mount adapter and no can. On a 6.5 lb rifle, that's saying something. For reference, I'm just running a CAR buffer and recoil spring. Nothing special.

YMMV, but at this juncture I wouldnt hesitate to pick up another. It's $150 cheaper than the 2A (which, admittedly, I still prefer), and its about 90% as good.

As for Blackout, if you're running a short barrel and/or mixing supers/subs I'm sure it'd help. My 6.75" could use one, but I'm saddled to the Troy PDW BCG/stock, and carving up a $250 carrier to experiment with is out of my realm of bravery...

...For now.
