Spent casings found at crime scenes can supposedly be matched up against spent casings recorded in a database, sort of like finger prints, and then the police can track down the original owner of the firearm that produced the casing and then try to find out the guns history and who has it now. I don't know if that has ever worked out and actually solved a real crime. I do know police have found a small number of guns produce a "disproportionately large percentage" of casings found at crime scenes, which just means the same gun gets used in multiple crimes, but it doesn't follow the same person doing all those crimes. Spent casings out of brand new freshly minted firearms have fewer distinctive markings than spent casings out of firearms that have seen a lot of use and abuse, but supposedly it's enough of a difference to help solve crimes.
