Just like the title states, I'm having problems with some of the rubber parts on my D2 dry rotting.

I bought an NDF cover from TNVC when they first came out in April 2013. DBAL saw a couple range trips with it on there but other than that, spent time in my safe. No real exposure to the elements or prolonged sunlight.

Sometime in December last year I pulled it out and noticed the straps on it were dry rotted. Tried to take the cover off and they fell apart. Ordered a new one from you guys.

About 4 weeks weeks ago (had a lot going on and just now getting around to addressing this), I pulled the DBAL out again only to find not only had the straps dry rotted but the bottom one snapped on its own and, the part on the remote switch cover that attaches it to the mounting screw is also dry rotted. The DBAL has been in the safe nearly the entire 7 months since putting the new NDF cover on. I had it out roughly 3 months ago to function check and didn't notice any problem with either part then.

Haven't had any problem with the illuminator cover. It still looks okay but the rubber does feel a little hard.

Is dry rot common to these and should I expect to have to replace these parts regularly?

Interesting, never saw this before. Give Jaimie an email jaimie at tnvc dot com or a call and we will replace these free of charge.  I will also get with Steiner and report the findings.  Just a thought (thinking out loud here), maybe rub a Q-Tip with a  miniscule amount of petroleum jelly on the strap portion of the covers.  Either way, lemme do some checking around but get back with Jaimie and we'll get a replacement set sent out.

Awesome! I really appreciate it!

I'll give the petroleum jelly a try and will shoot Jaimie an email.

Looking forward to what Steiner says.

Thanks again!

Got the replacement parts Thursday. Thanks again!

Just wanted to follow up and see if there had been any word from Steiner about the dry rotting issue or if there's anything they recommend doing to prevent it.

Welcome!

Talked with the Rep today.  Nothing significant to report as they have not seen any widespread issues of this issue.  They did agree with my assessment of petroleum jelly, letting it soak in and then wiping it off.  Thank you.

I will definitely treat the new parts then!
